Fledgling discussion

Anyone have suggestions for other books featuring/about vampires of color? My 'tween daughter has started reading vampire books and I've noticed that all of the books she's checked out of the library so far are about White vampires (and probably White people in general).

Butler wrote this book because there weren't many black vampire books, so I think the pickings are slim!

LA Banks has an entire series!

Do you know if they're appropriate reading for an 11-year-old?

Hmmmm. Maybe not for an 11 year old. The nature of vampire stories involves a very sensual and violent plot orientation...but, you should probably read a book and then consider the maturity of your 11 year old--and also consider other media that your daughter is consuming (tv/internet, etc) which may already expose her to much of this type of material...sex and violence themes are not more salient in books.

Any writers can now jump in to include vamps of color...I enjoyed Fledgling very much. Personally, I am working on multicultural series myself, minus the vamps though: )

I suggest visiting blacksciencefictionsociety.com where there are quite a few writers who work in the vampire genre.

It's a growing community of Black creatives who are, in several cases, the vanguard of science fiction, fantasy and horror for the new Millennium.
