Is anyone doing the 2012 reading challenge?

I am at 10/50. I spend a lot of time reading, but I'm super slow so I tried to set a realistic goal.....at my current pace I'm nine books behind. :)

Karin | 415 comments I am doing the 2012 reading challenge. I am at 53/250 and at my current pace I'm 48 books behind, but I have time now to catch back up. I picked this goal because I wanted to read more books than last year and the fact that I read about 20 books a semester for college courses, which does not include the books I read for fun.

Wow, I may have asked this before, but what are you studying? I usually only have to read 5+ for school.(Of course that might change as I am thinking about studying literature for education.)

message 4: by Karin (new)

Karin | 415 comments I just graduated but I had been studying English Language and Literature along with Latin Language.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Ah, that explains it. I took Latin in high school, it was fun. Do you read much that's written in Latin?

message 6: by Karin (new)

Karin | 415 comments I do read written Latin a lot more now, but it can be difficult depending on the author in understanding the Latin without a translated English version nearby. I hope to continue reading written Latin in my freetime.

I always wonder how much got lost in translation when I'm reading a book that was originally published in another language.
Even the Harry Potter series. I'm American and I know the British versions are really different(Even though it's not really a different language.) I'd love to read them sometime, but I'll have to special order them. The same goes for a lot of British books; I wish the publishers would just leave them alone, it's part of the fun of reading something that takes place in another country.

That's really cool. We had to read part of the Aeneid(I think) for my Latin class in high school, but it's amazing how quickly it just sort of leaks out of your head.'Use it or lose it'. - But I still remember that "e pluribus unum" is from a poem about making a salad. Ha!(that tidbit was worth 4 years. :)

I took German this year, and I'm trying to decide whether to continue with it, or maybe to start taking Latin again.(But neither helps me at all with my major, I just enjoy it.)

I'm up to 14/50 now. Only 7 books behind. Yay! I feel so accomplished. :p

╟ ♫ Tima ♪ ╣ ♥ (tsunanisaurus) I am also doing 50 books this year for the challenge. I'm at 37/50 so far. I wasn't anticipating having so much free time on my hands this summer!

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Ahead of schedule, nice work. :)

╟ ♫ Tima ♪ ╣ ♥ (tsunanisaurus) In April, I was only at 8/50, haha. I'm currently holed up at home with some injuries. The only upside to them is that I have plenty of time to catch up on reading.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

As long as you also spend the time healing. Feel better soon. :) I've been reading a lot lately too, but I am very slow...I'm one of those people who reads every word, and then I start thinking about what I'm reading and it takes even longer. It makes it more fun though.

╟ ♫ Tima ♪ ╣ ♥ (tsunanisaurus) Oh thank you for the well wishes, I'm slowly getting better. Between my 2 dogs and my books, there's no better healing process, in my opinion ;) . I read the the same way most of the time. Sometimes [*caution booknerd admission ahead*], I even stop to take out a notebook and write down a thought about what it was I was reading. Haha. As silly as that may seem, I feel like it's enhanced my reading experience.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Not silly - awesome. That would be kind of neat to have around when you're rereading a book. You could see what you thought the first time. :)

I hit my goal. I am 112/100. I ended up with a lot of time on my hands and started reading a book at work for my breaks and a different one at home so at any given time I might have several books going at different places.

message 18: by Nina (new)

Nina (marshnina) | 1 comments 70/75 I am way ahead of the goal I set and I have increased the total once already!

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished at 30/50.
