That quote sits at the front of my edition of The Mayor of Castro Street: The Life and Times of Harvey Milk. It is an amazingly self-sacrificial sentiment. I'm not from the US, and live in a country where the government recently decided NOT to repeal the anti-sodomy laws. The religious right raised a HUGE stink and there was a petition to keep the anti-sodomy laws on the books.
We're a very diverse group. Some of you guys may have lived through Milk's assassination; some of you are the beneficiaries of Milk's legacy; and others may not have heard of him until the film came out. So, I'd love to find out what you think of him and what effect his assassination had on you. Do you think that it had any effect on the push for gay rights? Do you think it was silly of him to put himself so at risk? By making that statement, was he practically asking someone to come take potshots at him? Is he like the gay equivalent of Martin Luther King?
