Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Midyear Challenge: Finish Those Series!

This challenge focuses on finishing series you've started. They can be series you started as a child and want to know what happened to your favorite childhood characters (for example, Lowry's The Giver or L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time), they can be series you would like to start and finish within the span of the rest of the year, or they can just be any series you started but never finished.

Rules:

- Challenge runs from July 1 through December 31

- For the purposes of this challenge, a series must have at least three books in it

- Identify how many and which series you plan to finish (like the Listopia Challenge)

- Books marked as x.5 in the series are optional (for example, Percy Jackson and the Sword of Hades is #4.5 in the series so does not need to be read)

- No matter how many books you've read in the series prior to the start of this challenge (even if you've read four of the five books, say), it counts as long as you finish

- You can change your planned lists at any time

- Track your progress either here or your corner (if the latter, post here first so that we know you're participating)

- Progress will be tracked by completed series only--individual books will not count, but you can still use this thread to track them

- To count, you must finish the series through books published in 2012 (i.e., if a series has three books currently out but a fourth is coming out in 2013, you only need to finish the first three books to count it toward this challenge)

Trevor will be the leader for this challenge.

Nathan (nthnlwly) Welcome to the challenge everybody!!

@Sheena, looks good! Just one thing, at the top of your post is a link that says "(some html is ok)", click that and you'll find out how to put lines through titles (it's where it says "strike text"). Right now, everything is crossed out! No big deal, you've just left out the "end" tag, which looks like this: < /s > (but without the spaces).

message 13: by Connieb (new)

Connieb (otherwordly) | 82 comments Oh, I have a ton of series, so many so that I'll never get them read, lol. I'll start off with a couple and see how many I can add after that, ok?

Fire
Bitterblue

A Discovery of Witches
Shadow of Night

That's fine, Connieb! Good choices. I read Graceling a couple years ago and it was really good. I didn't finish the series though, so let me know how it is!

message 17: by Connieb (new)

Connieb (otherwordly) | 82 comments Will do! I'm double-dipping, so should be able to add at least a few more series by year's end. I'm definitely NOT adding any Pratchett though, there's way too many, lol.

Nathan (nthnlwly) Oh, I didn't even notice you'd updated, Sheena! I'll fix that right now...

Everyone, please post when you complete a series!! I'm quite bad for updating unless a new post is made and GR emails me about it. Thanks, and keep reading everybody. :)

message 30: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) I completed my first series, the Ender series by Orson Scott Card. :)

message 31: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Great job, Trevor!

message 32: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) Thanks. :)

message 33: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 766 comments I finished Fifty Shades last week! So it´s my first done for this challenge.

message 34: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) Excellent, Johanna! And how did you like it?

message 35: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 766 comments Oh I very much loved it!

message 36: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments I think that book is ones of those things that you either love or hate, there's not many people who I know who think it's just okay. BTW Johanna, is there an actual storyline/plot or is it just the MCs doing stuff over and over again? I want to know but am not prepared (or allowed) to read it to find out.

message 37: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 766 comments Yes it does have a proper plot. Otherwise I would not have read all three just for the erotic stuff. But I do know that some people think it´s poorly written. I myself don´t care of anything if I like the story.

message 38: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments Okay, thanks for latting me know

message 39: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) It has piqued my interest as well. It is a very polarizing book!

message 40: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 766 comments I have been listening to these women on another group talking about Fifty Shades for ages it seems and finally I gave in and ordered the books from amazon.

I read a few free erotic short stories before reading the books because I had no experience on erotica before so I didn´t want it to be too strange when I start reading the books.

message 41: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) It's an... interesting genre, that's for sure. Not one of my favorites but I dabble. ;P

message 42: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments I just finished my first series. I'm going to miss reading these books now that it's all over :(

Maximum Ride Started 2009
The Angel Experiment
School's Out - Forever
Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports
The Final Warning
Max
Fang
Angel
Nevermore - ★★★★ - 09/08/12

message 43: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 766 comments Another one read, Fallen this time.

message 44: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) Congrats, Lilac! I feel that way too sometimes when I finish a series. It's bittersweet. :)

Johanna, have you finished the series, or just the first book? How did you like it?

message 45: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 766 comments Only the first book. It was a reread, I think it wasn´t as good as on the first time, but I still liked it a lot.

message 46: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) I've been rereading more books recently, and I'm finding the same: some of them just aren't as good on a second read. Still a favorite, but not as... impressive, I guess is the word.

message 47: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 766 comments Same thing for me, I am actually starting to think that maybe I should leave some books alone and never reread so they´ll stay amazing for good! :)

message 48: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I agree 100%. I just reread A Wrinkle In Time, and it just didn't hold up to what I remembered.

message 49: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments Would a series count for this challege if it was going to have three books in it but the third isn't released until 2013?

message 50: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) Kara may disagree, haha, but I'll say that can count. I'm pretty flexible with the rules...
