This challenge is where I get some closure! I’m going to give the books on my “DNF-Try Again” shelf another go! 43 books currently reside there. Let’s see what happens!

message 13: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments 43 DNFs?!? Even I wouldn't sign up for that challenge.

Of course, I'd never have that pile as I doggedly finish everything I start. Even the horrificly terrible ones.

I think this is going to be my real challenge for the year. My DNF graveyard.... O_O

No problem! Don't get mad at me when you read something you hate... lol! I'm a little concerned about horror, victorian and classics. ALl things I hate.

message 21: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Thanks! :)

Horror does concern me..I really really don't like to be scared, but reading The Island of Dr. Moreau taught me that not all horrors are particularly scary; they might just be disturbing.

message 22: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I can do Classics. Victorian just tends to annoy me, although Frankenstein would fit into both Horror and Victorian I think.

ANd classics!

message 24: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Too bad it would be a re-read for me, which I don't do. :)

message 25: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments No re-reads for you? That would make me sad. I visit my books often.

I'm not doing re-reads for this challenge, though. It would make it too easy.

message 26: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I just find there's too much I want to read to spend time revisiting. It's not entirely true, I have re-read Douglas Adams probably four times, but for the most part I am like the label on plush toys "new material only."

message 27: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments LOL

I tend to only reread earlier books in series as a refresher for continuing said series.

message 28: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments lol! I can understand that. Its comfort to me. But I read a lot of new stuff, too.

message 29: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Thats because you're a reading machine, like my husband!!

message 32: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Nyssa wrote: "Dear woman, you have 10 books on your currently reading shelf!!!"

lol! And I'm not reading a single one of them. I actually finished two of them (I think) but I haven't done reviews...

message 33: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Well, I understand you've been under the weather for a while now. I hope you're recovering and will feel completely better soon. (((HUGS)))
Rest. Your books will be patiently waiting for you.

message 34: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Would Persuasion or actually any of Jane Austen's work count as "Literary Fiction"?

message 35: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments My vote is yes.

"Certain fictional works that are claimed to hold literary merit." I think that's open to interpretation so that anything can fit in there. Persuasion would definitely fit in it. Pride and Prejudice has beeen shelved as "literary fiction" 123 times if that's any indication for Jane Austen. Of course "The Time Traveller's Wife" has also been shelved 101 times. While I like the idea of the read a bit of everything challenge, I think I'm going to avoid it because genres just tend to be a bunch of hairsplitting BS. I'm going to base my challenges on hard facts, like date first published and not this touchy feel Classic or Literary mumbo jumbo. :)

Ugh! The hack is the worst (well, 2nd worst - Post nasal drip is the worst, IMO) and can be so painful. I'm glad to hear that you're getting better.

See now, I asked on MobileRead as well, and gmw & HarryT said "No" citing writing for "art" vs writing for "entertainment" (regardless of artistic value). In other words Austen did not intend for her works to be seen as "art" so she did not write them as such.
Harry suggested Joyce (to which I said no) or Virginia Woolf (which I said I would consider as I've never read her before).

Edited to Add: The links in their names go to their posts on MR.

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments So, did you ever read The Madness of Hallen?

Not as yet. I want to get to it this year. BUt I'm not reading anything still. :-(

BTW, I dropped by MR today. Oh, goodness! They're still whining about Apple??! One thread and I was done. Seen that movie before.

message 42: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments What whining about Apple? I stick in Reading Recommendations and the Lounge. :)

I win. Wait, wrong forum.

Nyssa | 1569 comments Mrs. J You can not allow me to "beat" you at your own challenge. Thats just not right! ;)

In all seriousness, though, I do hope you're at least enjoying your gaming/non-reading time, and that you're happy.

As to MR: Like HiMS, I stay primarily in the Reading Recommendations section. I don't even really visit the Lounge that much, except to occasionally play one of the games that I started.
