Since we have had some successful Read Along's recently, I wanted to make a spot where you can ask and see if anyone wants to read something with you. Or you can say what you plan on reading and see if there is a partner that wants to read with you :)

Good idea, Lu!
I am always up for a read along or buddy read. The only problem is that I have to buy the book and that can take some time, which is why I hardly ever read the BoM. I read those only if I already have the book. But on the positive side I can stick to a reading schedule and I have always something to say about a book :)
I am also up for almost any kind of book. Although I do like a book to have some volume so there is something to discuss :)
Upcoming planned buddy reads that people might want to join in are Contact by Carl Sagan, Duma Key by Stephen King, Cry to Heaven by Anne Rice and The Club Dumas by Arturo Perez Reverte. These are all books that can be read for the Deserted island challenge and buddy reads that Lauren S and I have planned. We haven't yet decided in which order we are going to read them. Also when is subject to Lauren S reading schedule since she does a lot of reviews and she has to fit them in. We have also talked about reading kraken by China Mieville. If anyone is interested in reading those we can always see if we can change the order in which we want to read them.

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I never seem to have much to say about the stuff I read, but I do like read-alongs. It's sometimes nice just to have someone else for that extra motivation to pick up a book or finish it. :)

message 4: by Riana (new)

Riana | 397 comments I will be starting with Stardust today, anybody still going to read it for the author of the month book?

message 5: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Good idea for a thread Lu! As Barbara said, she and I do regular buddy reads, and we'll be doing the ones she mentioned (although I might not do Duma Key), probably at a rate of about one per month. Anyone is welcome to join in :)

At the end of each discussion we usually decide what our next read will be, but I'll announce it here as well to give anyone who's interested a chance to get a copy of the book.

message 6: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I'd read Cry to Heaven with you when you get to it.

message 7: by Chrizette (new)

Chrizette | 906 comments I am going to read DREAMLESS by Josephine Angelini soon. I just heard on Friday that I was approved for a review copy. I have never done a read along before. How does it work? Do we discuss the book as we read it?

Dreamless (Starcrossed, #2) by Josephine Angelini

Yep :) Just post any thoughts you have as you go along.

As a courtesy, it's a good idea to say where you are in the book, so that other readers don't accidentally read spoilers. And you can use spoiler tags for major reveals.

I also have a copy, I'd be willing to read with you?

That would be great, Lu. I should be receiving my book in the week - will let you know. I am excited to be part of my first read along :) I am hoping that this will help me with my reviews too. I am trying to improve my (too) informal style.

Not a 100 sure when I can start tho. Please let me know if you have a plan. Maybe the 1st?

message 12: by Chrizette (new)

Chrizette | 906 comments My schedule is very flexible except for one or two dates, so the 1st sounds fine. I can fall in with when you are ready :)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
I think the 1st-2nd would be best :) As long as we finish it on the 9th, I have a excavation I'm going on, on the 10th.

Would that be ok?

message 14: by Chrizette (new)

Chrizette | 906 comments That is perfect, Lu :) Thank you.

Lauren Smith Is anyone up for The Passage by Justin Cronin? I just got a review copy. I don't know when exactly I'll read it, but I want to do so before the sequel comes out in October.

Might join you,but the earliest I can start is 2nd week in August

That would be fine. A bit later In August would probably be even better for me, even September.

message 20: by Liezel (new)

Liezel (liezkl) | 736 comments fine by me, let me know when :)

I'll join this one. I have the book and it's on my TBR shelf, even though I am not sure why as it is not my usual type of choice. Maybe I will learn to like this kind of book better with a read along. I'm pretty flexible with when, so just let me know what everyone else decides.

Sign me up for Contact, definitely! I would also be interested in Kraken if you decide to do that one!

message 24: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
We'll let you know when we start! We are first going to read Cry to Heaven in mid August. So Contact will be September at the earliest. Normally we know a couple of days to a week before we start what book we are going to read. So you will have time to finish you're other books :)
Kraken will be read after we do the Deserted Island books.

message 25: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Gonna try and keep a list:

- Dreamless (1-9 August) Lu and Chriz so far
- Cry to Heaven (mid August) Barbara and Lauren
- The Passage (later In August, even September) Lauren, Varla and Liezel
- Contact - (September) Barbara, Varla and Lauren

Other Interests: Kraken

Emma (emmauk007) | 1081 comments I also would like to read Cry to Heaven. Just let me know what dates exactly. Will be fun

Great! I guess we start when Lauren S. is back in Ethiopia after visiting family and friends in SA. I believe she has one more week before she heads back. We will let you know when exactly.

Thanks Barbara will look forward to it.

message 29: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I go back on the 14th. I want a few days to resurrect my blog after all this downtime, so how about we start on the next weekend (Saturday the 18th). Although if I have to go out we'll have to move it to Monday (20th)

For those who want to read The Passage, we can start right after the Cry to Heaven discussion has ended, and then we can do Contact in mid or late September, if all goes according to plan. How does that sound?

That suits me Lauren. I also hope you enjoy The Passage, I am assuming that you and Lu are reading it for the Deserted Island Challenge. It was my nomination and I loved it, looking forward to the sequel which is out in October.

message 32: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Oh my god, I didn't even realise it was one of your nominations! I'd decided to read The Giver, so I didn't look at your list again. I actually got a review copy of The Passage and the sequel is coming out later this year, which is why I want to read and review it soon. The fact that it'll count for Deserted Island too is awesome :)

I don't think Lu's joining the read-along though.

message 33: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
I won't be reading it with you either. I have thought about it and I rather wait till all the books are out and read it in one go. I get frustrated if I have to wait years for the next book. So I rather read series in one go. I have also already read a nomination made by Emma so I don't need it for the Deserted Island. But of course I will be there for Cry to Heaven and Contact.

message 34: by Riana (new)

Riana | 397 comments I also want to join in with Cry to Heaven, but I must get the book first, hope to have it in time!

message 35: by Lauren (new)

But will she share the book???

message 37: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yeah, she gave me a copy :)

Lauren Smith Which, I just realised, means I can give you a copy Riana. So dof... Anyway, PM your email address if you want it.

Edit: It's a mobi file.

Any idea yet, Lauren, when we start Cry to Heaven?

message 41: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I was just about to post here :) I may have to go out of town for the weekend, and I have some editing to do for someone, so lets start on Monday. Is that ok with everyone?

message 42: by Emma (new)

Emma (emmauk007) | 1081 comments Mondays fine with me. I should have finished River God by then. Great book by the way.

message 43: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Fine by me. :)

Got another question for you. We have talked about reading Duma Key by Stephen King. First you said you didn't want to read the book, then you said you might and in this discussion you said you might not read it. Could you give me a definite answer? The only reason I haven't yet read the book is that you might read it with me. I don't mind waiting if I know I am going to read the book with you, but I really want to get some challenges out of the way, so I can read books I choose because I want to read them and not because I need them for a challenge. :)

message 44: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I'm so sorry, I didn't realise I was holding you up! Go ahead and read Duma Key. I still haven't decided which of Henry's books to read, but I'm leaning toward Uglies, so I don't want to commit to a buddy read of Duma Key.

message 45: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
You're not holding me up! I didn't mean it that way. But I just like getting the books out of the way that I have to read for challenges. I have all these different piles for different challenges and I like to see them go. :) I am now reading the last books for the A-Z challenges so my mind is on completing challenges.
And we still have The Club Dumas and Contact to read too for the Deserted island Challenge, so it is not like I need that book to finish it. But since you were going back and forth a bit about this book I just wanted to know what we were going to do with it and now I do. Thanks!

message 46: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Varla, Liezel, and anyone else who wants to do a group read of The Passage - how about we start on Monday 10th September?

message 47: by Varla Fiona (new)

Varla Fiona (dory_42) | 1332 comments Mod
I'm in. How much will we read a day?

message 48: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I don't usually go according to a schedule - would you prefer one? I can take a look at the book and see how it could be divided.

message 49: by Varla Fiona (new)

Varla Fiona (dory_42) | 1332 comments Mod
I am liable to read the whole thing in a few days, if I have enough time. If that is OK with you, I'm good with no schedule.

message 50: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith That's fine with me :) The only thing I ask is that you use spoiler tags where necessary in the discussion, and jsut state where you are in the book before commenting, so that no one accidentally reads spoilers.
