i would like to see it as a happing ending, otherwise the whole purpose of the book would be suicide methods and say that suicide is the only answer.

I think she didn't kill herself but she lived to be a new person and move on. Dead must mean the person she used to be.

People, she didn't kill herself!! She realized that she could start over, so she says, "I’m a blank slate." It was very obvious. And she deleted her account, which actually means that she refused to do suicide. The members who complete their mission (of killing themselves), their account names would appear on their 'day of determination', in the website. But the ones who deleted their accounts, they would never return to the website, cause, you know, they weren't brave enough to kill themselves..

I don’t really think she went through with it because she deleted her account. She said the plan was to drown herself and leave from school early and walk home so how would she give santana the computer back? But then why did she keep throwing her stuff out? maybe she wanted a fresh start. She said she was a clean slate, so maybe she was going to try to start anew because it doesn’t make sense to just end it like that if she killed herself in the end because when she’s leaving the house she’s saying she heads into the light, the light probably being newfound hope. She stopped being so withdrawn from Santana in the previous chapter so i think maybe she’ll give it a chance to live maybe? i’m a little confused but idk

"With determination and purpose, I head into the light." That's the ending . She said into the light. Not through the light. She talks about death when she goes through the light onto the other side. Plus, her finally able to release her tears shows her realizing that there's hope. And she started to miss her mom, beginning to get scared, worrying about her new friend, and coming to the realization that she crawled out of that bathroom. She even kicked a bullie and stood up for herself and her friends. Probably the first time, she fought back in her life as well as making friends.

To be honest, I feel that she killed herself in the end. I feel so bad for Santana because he actually wanted to help her, and then he himself is sick on top of that. I honestly hated the ending because I hate cliff-hangers lol.

She was determined to do what she had her mind set on, but when a boy enters the picture when don't things spiral out of reach? I don't know if she did it, maybe we weren't ever meant to find out...

I think she did kill herself because at the end she said she was going into the light and the website asked her "How will you get into the light?". So I believe she did it, because if you look back on the book, you'll notice that the whole time, the light was symbolism for dying.

I don't think she killed herself. The ending would seem meaningless to me then. Why write a book about a young girl who can't find a way out?

Allison Eigenbrod I agree things might not always end up bad in real life but a lot of times they do. Some times there is no happy ending and it's just one way to look ...more

she didn't kill herself. that was the whole point, i think, of saying "i head into the light" - she gave it a diff meaning in the end - she redefined her life. she also deleted her account, which - why would she if she was going to commit suicide?

I just finished reading it, and I believe she did not die. When I read it, I was sure she was dead because "through the light" and I thought closing the door meant the bathroom door and she was going to kill herself. Then I read the Day of Determination over and remembered that she had compared herself to the dog because the owner was teasing for the dog with the Frisbee. She then says that the dog wins because it makes the owner pick up the Frisbee. The way I see it, this shows that she over the thought of committing suicide and realized she had something to live for. That being family and Santana and Emily. Her room was in fact bare, but remember her parents were planning on redecorating her room anyway. She was starting anew going into the light which was the outside world with Santana, probably since its the next day(DOD)and that was when his birthday was.
If this is too long, basically I don't think she died but if you think it would be better if she did so the book would stand out, or any other reason, you are welcome to believe that because Julie Ann Peters let you decide the fate of Daelyn. Which I thought was a good idea considering the point of this book was to make you think.
Thanks for reading!

Whe I first read the book, I believed definitively that she killed herself. but the more times I read it, it seemed that she lives. I think that was the point of the ending, that no matter how sure you are; everytime you reread , everytime you think about it, your interpretation of the ending changes a bit.

Ya I think she killed herself. She basically says so herself in the title. She has driven herself to do so, and I think she did it.

They it ended Im pretty sure she killed her self witch felt right for the book

Her choosing life seemed pretty obvious to me, actually-you hear her father yell something at her and then she leaves. She had plans to do it when her parents were still hours away from being home, or else there's no way she would have completed. She chose a new life of light and hope.

i hate the ending..i like to think that she is alive, but there's also a side of me saying she killed herself..ugh it's so frustrating !

The lack of clarity in the ending frustrated me so much. I thought it was such a strong book until the author let the reader decide the outcome.

I thought the point of the end was that she didn't commit suicide. Santana was enough for her to keep living, so she did. Right?

I don't think she did, because she deleted herself off the website, and she brought Santana's computer to school with her. If she skipped early to give it to him, he would have known something was up, and he would have talked her out of it. She deleted herself off the website, and it said once you delete yourself you can't ever sign up again. But if she was going to, she would have just left it so she'd show up on the DOD list. I really hope she didn't do it in the end.

i think , hopefully , through the light meant maybe a new beginning? but near the end she was being annoying how she treated emily! she's going what you went through , you always wanted a real friend, though you treat her like other people treated her really? but near the end i guess she was nicer

I don't think she killed herself in the end. I think her saying "I head into the light" meant that she headed into a different life.

I don't think she does, I've read the book twice and I think if you re-read the last chapter you'll realize that Santana has pulled her out of her depression to a point where she believes she has a friend. Which of course she does.

I also think that she killed herself too. Just look at the ending where she said "With determination and purpose, I head into the light" plus take note of the title "By the time you read this I'll be dead" So I think there's a connection between the ending and the title. Although I hate to think it that way because I don't want her to do "it", man I have so much hope for her.

I think she killed herself.... In the end she says, "i will walk through the light ." and the website was called through the light and yeah... Even though i wanted her to not commit suicide it would have been a cliched ending and the author is probaly too smart for that.
