David I did not. My favorite vampire locked away at the bottom of a church.

W.T.F. is all I have to say.

Jaye Latts It's been a long time since I read this book (loved it!) and I have to say that I am absolutely crazy about Lestat, so having him be so traumatized did the same to me! And, I may be wrong, but didn't Anne Rice just abandon him? I don't remember what happened to him later on (in other books). Anyone know?

I just finished this book a few weeks back, and of course hated the end. Actually, I hated it so much that I had to put down the vampire serie for a while. Now I´m starting Armand and the one of Marius. For what is said so far, Lestat is still not moving after months and the church is a refugee for vampires of some sort.

Eme San I hate it...

Bonnie Colvert Hated it, but Lestat always pulls through, just finished The Vampire Armand. Onto the next installment!

Phillip Goodman lestat is meant to be off with memnoch, his spirit is not in his body, but he does return, i thought the ending was full of promise, that rice never really delivered on, just went off became a catholic and wrote a bunch of books about jesus, memnoch has allways been my favourite of the chronicles, its a shame she didn't continue with that story line, and she now seems to have abandoned the chronicles in favour of 'angel time' which i've not been able to bring myself to read..

Brolie Lestat's coma state was so uncharacteristic, even if he was with Memnoch or whatever. With Veronica's Veil, I thought even that was stupid, how she betrayed him (in my opinion) by giving it to the public and all that. BUT the worst, was Armand's response to it all. Throwing himself into the sun? Really? Made me hate Armand more than I already did and so I didn't read Armand, just read Pandora (loved that one a lot btw) and let it be. I loved the rest of Memnoch so much though, that it still one of my favorites, but no- the ending was horrible horrible horrible

Phillip Goodman i still want to find what he was up to, rice has left the church, so she can go back to the satanic stuff.

Bonnie Colvert Phillip wrote: "i still want to find what he was up to, rice has left the church, so she can go back to the satanic stuff."

Here here! I agree!

Here Here I also agree we need more LeStat! I loved all the books :) Anne needs to continue LeStat he is in a new era and we need to find out how he deals with our times.

Jason Kowalczyk I did not really care for the ending, but it made for some good things Once Lestat was back again. We do need much more Lestat, i hope we do get more... someday

In which book is Lestat back??? I was so mad wit this book that I stopped reading Rice at all.

Blackwood Farm is where he returns but the story is not from his point of view. "Blood Canticle" is the true final book in the tales of the Vampires and I would recommend it.

Rico Lamoureux The only problem I really had with this book was Armand's reaction to the veil. In my opinion, the most interesting part of the story was the theory that 'the devil' was actually in hell because he stood up for the humans when God was causing so much devastation to them. (Fires, floods, disease, etc.) That he was the actual savior was pretty brilliant.

I guess I was fine with Lestat being as inactive as he was in this one because I knew there were other books to follow with him in them. If this would have been the last of the chronicles then I would have been bitchin' up a storm, like I did with the actual last one, Blood Canticle-LOL!

MsBeaglely OMG I hated this book so much. It took me over 2 months to muddle through it. It was years before I picked up another of Anne's book afterwards.

I loved this ending! In my opinion it is the only thing that makes it worth reading. I love the other Chronicles Books, but this one was just boring. Until the end, which is so surprisingly shocking that you just don't want to believe it. But there it is. That's just great. :-)

Lizzie Tannenbaum I did not care for this one.

Jennifer Wow. I'm quite surprised by all the comments. I, myself, love this book and consider it my favorite in the entire series. Yes, there were uncharacteristic character moments, but that added to the reality of it to me. Discovering sides of spirituality you may not have considered or even going through major events in life have us all act uncharacteristically in our lives. Again, I really enjoyed this book and wish there was room in the series for more serious events such as what was portrayed here.

AngeliQue I love the book though not as much as I loved The Vampire Lestat, and the ending, well, I always wanted to see Lestat(my love, my sin) inside a church in preternatural coma or close to that and it was really well written so no complaint here.
I'm hoping her new book on the brat prince would be much better though. So looking forward for "Prince Lestat"

message 23: by Lynn (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lynn C Re-reading "Memnoch the Devil" has me worried that "Prince Lestat" will be all about theology. Both Akasha and Memnoch referred to Lestat as their prince, and several characters have also called him the Brat Prince. I just really, really hope if Anne Rice does revisit heaven and hell that it's done in a less weighty, confusing and conflicting fashion. I still don't know whether Memnoch was telling the truth, so I'm not sure if her portrayal of God was benevolent or indifferent to human suffering. I guess Dora was supposed to be the one purely devout and kindly character, but I can't accept a TV evangelist, mobster's daughter and vampire's paramour as entirely humble, selfless and sinless. Gretchen in Rice's previous novel "The Body Thief" was a far better example of holiness, but really I'd rather read about female characters who aren't so virginal or emotionally detached.

David D. Schneider, MD I think it is simply a flawed novel by a woman whose theology is incomplete and in transition. Witness her transition from lifelong Catholicism to Jewish mysticism as supportive of my premise. Many of her tenants regarding the true historic fundamentals of the Christian Faith are shallow or incomplete and serve her primarily as plot devices and perhaps are representative of her personal struggles with her own eschatology.
