Katerina (klymene) Okay. I realize that this is a group for current college students. And I am a current college student. It's dual enrollment in High school and my current university. It's pretty awesome. I'm saving money in college as well as challenging myself.

Anyways, I'm currently considering the University of Rochester, Carnegie Mellon University, and Northwestern University. I've already decided I'm going to do a dual degree in Piano Performance and Engineering (Probably Materials, Biomedical, or chemical).

What I'm wondering is what you've heard about students that dual degree in Engineering and Music? Is it realistic to do in four years? I got a five on the AP US History exam, as well as the college credits I've accumulated last year, and will get this year. And about half of them are chemistry and physics credits.

Also, do you know of any other colleges strong in music and engineering?

Kayla | 604 comments I've heard from professors that it can be really difficult to try and do a double major unless some of the major requirements overlap (such as if you major in two sciences). I'm sure it's possible to complete the dual degree in four years, but you probably wouldn't have much room in your schedule for electives, so your choice of courses will be mostly limited to what's required to earn your degree. If you're okay with that, I'd say go for it.

However, you could always choose to major in engineering or music and then just minor in the other one later on if you don't feel you can commit to two very different majors. Most colleges don't require you to choose a major until the end of your sophomore year, so you'll have plenty of time to decide what you want to do. By then, you would probably have already completed all the courses required for a minor and that should make it easier to decide if you want to continue the coursework or not.

Good luck with everything!! :)

Katerina (klymene) Thanks for the advice. I've always loved both Music and Math/science. I don't think I could ever cut down on one of them.

My school offers this kind of a program. University of Massachusettes, Lowell (www.uml.edu). Apparently they have a very highly rated Sound Engineering program and very good performance as well. UML was founded as textile school and quickly moved on to being a Technical Institute. So the Engineering is very good.
