If you've never read anything by him, read "Gorky Park" first so you can meet Arkady Renko...then read "Polar Star" immediately afterwards. I still remember seeing "Polar Star" in the bookstore--I guess it was like I had thought Raymond Chandler had only written "The Big Sleep" and then one day finding "Farewell, My Lovely" in a bookstore window. "Polar Star" is one of the best things Smith has written.
