One great book that I have recently read is The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Cormac McCarthy has written many great novels in his career including The Crossing, Cities of The Plain, and Blood Meridian. He is also the author of No Country For Old Men, and All The Pretty Horses, which have both been made into major motion pictures. The Road is a fictional tale of a father and son forced to hike across a post-apocalyptic America to the East Coast. Everyday is a fight for their lives as they try to reach the coast. Food sources are scarce and the father and son are starving. A majority of the humans left are cannibals and resort to eating each other. Every day they run into harsh weather conditions from freezing temperatures to strong storms that make building a fire and shelter impossible. With only a pistol to defend themselves the father and son move closer and closer to the coast little by little each day. Bonded by love, they both do everything within themselves to push themselves to keep going everyday. The boy is young, still at a simple age of innocence, and naïve to the cruel habits of this new world.
The boy’s personality helps the man stay positive in the brutal times they face. Anyone who has a strong bond with their father or mother would love this book. McCarthy shows us that even when no hope remains and all is lost, unconditional love between parents and their offspring can give them the drive they need to do anything. One interesting thing about the style of this book is that the reader never gets large details. McCarthy doesn’t explain why America is in an apocalyptic era and he doesn’t give you the names of the Man and his son. They are simply known as “ the Man”, and “the boy”. Some readers don’t like that but to me I like that the fact that I can make things up for myself. It gives me a sense that I’m a part of the story. The Road is not a hard read and it was a great book. It is now in the works to become a movie so if you are a lazy reader like me, you can wait for the movie. Viggo Mortensen will portray the man and I hope it will be as good as the book! ...more "
