However, that all balances out really well. I can say this first volume of The Wandering Inn is no less than a 4-star package in the way it has all come together, and could absolutely be as high as a 4.5, and I wouldn't argue with that. IN FACT: The last 7-10 chapters (out of 63, based on the audiobook numbering, in the Online version it's particularly 1.01H through to the end, with a few chapters before that I'd include in this) are very very good. The last 5 chapters were so many versions of WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK (in the good way) that my jaw was about on the floor the whole time, all 4 hours of it.

Also...I had heard a couple people say "none of these characters are safe."

I will fix that description because while there are many who are absolutely kept safe because DUH; instead, I'd say "Don't expect MANY of these characters to be safe."

The end will tell you the rest, because holy shit.

I'm shocked this thing nearly broke the 4-star into 5, but the reasons for that are really simple to explain.

A couple of these characters are fucking annoying as all shit. That's really all I need to say without going on a rant; it's really just that certain characters go through certain things that affect how they think about certain aspects of the world, while their day-to-day actions and comments don't always see that same shift, so certain things just feel constantly feel off. Chapter 50 was a notable example of a time when I could've DNF'd this thing without feeling bad because a certain character doesn't know how the fuck to listen to others, and another example in the same approximate area (I forget if it was just before Chapter 50 or just after) is a little disappointed based on that character's past actions *in the book*, but even that one I can easily overlook because of how she looks back on it in the chapters immediately following. The Chapter 50 example is the egregious one.

AND. That's the *only* egregious one. The rest of the annoying moments are just eyeroll inducing rather than worthy of dropping it to me. Despite that one unfortunate misstep of a chapter, the rest of this volume is honestly - legitimately - quite enjoyable.

The fact that this thing was 43 hours - 347,000 words - is really shocking. The slice of life aspect of this thing is actually incredible. The amount of big, momentous things that happen in terms of the overarching plot is...honestly not that much (and no surprise, given that the whole thing is over 10.5 MILLION words at this point, and only continuing to balloon), but the day-to-day of these characters and particularly the world was really enjoyable, and the reason why I can overlook the occasional annoying moments. If the rest of The Wandering Inn stays this kind of quality, I'm glad to be experiencing it right now as the audio is being produced for it, because I would never consider reading a web-novel like this otherwise.

Oh, and to address the whole "Lit-RPG" thing...I enjoy it. It adds an aspect to the world-building that is different from all the other stories I've experienced except for a DnD podcast I enjoy, and the way that's integrated in the story is so natural that I've never had any qualms with it - at ANY point.

If you can get past Erin's voice (in the audiobook specifically) in the first handful of chapters until more characters start being introduced, I see no reason why I can't recommend this. After 2 and a half months...I have to resist jumping straight into Volume 2, just want to get some other things done first. ...more "
