'The House in the Cerulean Sea' probably falls best into the urban fantasy genre. In general, I’m a big fan of these kinds of books because they often do a great job of transporting me into another world. That’s exactly what I was hoping for with this story—and wow, I’m thrilled!

The book follows caseworker Linus Baker, who works at the Department in Charge of Magical Youth and, therefore, is responsible for the well-being of magically gifted children. Linus takes the department’s rules and regulations very seriously, following them to the letter without questioning his actions.

Because of these qualities, Linus is chosen by the Extremely Upper Management for a highly classified mission: he must assess Mr. Arthur Parnassus’ orphanage and decide whether to recommend its closure. To do so, he has to spend a month on the remote island, observing daily life at the orphanage. Arthur’s wards are considered particularly complicated cases, and Linus suddenly finds himself in the midst of them.

I struggled a bit with the beginning of the book. At first, we only got to know Linus and his work, and it took a little too long for my taste before he finally boards the train to Mr. Parnassus. I understand why it was important to get insights into Linus’ life, but I still feel it could have been a bit shorter.

However, once we arrived on the island and met all its residents, I found the book absolutely outstanding.

I love how much attention is given to each and every child, as well as the adults on the island, making sure they all have distinct personalities. Personally, I was especially fond of Sal… and Theodore… and Lucy… and Chauncey… and Talia… and Phee. Reading about what happens in the orphanage and the children's feelings and dreams was simply wonderful. The love and emotion that shine through in this story are truly heartwarming.

Even though the beginning was a bit slow for me, I’m still completely convinced by this book. A solid 5-star read! ...more "
