The biggest downfall for me was all things Jacob, especially after he assaults Bella. Next reread I'm going through and redacting all things Jacob that aren't pivotal to the plot. He is vile
Notes from during my read - Jesus Jacob kissing Bella is a hard read it’s 100% assault in the most grotesque way, way way worse than the movies (in the movies I believe Jacob goes in for a kiss and Bella punches him almost right away. In the book she tries to push him off, can't because he's too strong, so stands 'like a statue' while he continues kissing her a few more times. Genuinely disturbing). I would be genuinely traumatized if that ever happened to me. The fact that it’s not taken seriously by her father and he pushes her to forgive him??? Oh man.
Considering blacking out all Jacob after Bella goes to Italy and see how readable the books still are
When I was younger I had a male friend do something similar to Jacob but 1000x less intense than this but I never met up with them again after they did that. Just the undertones in a physical interaction of ‘I am stronger than you and could hold you down if I wanted to’ are so deeply sinister I don’t know why you’d risk that person ever taking it further with you.
Not even going to comment on Jacob guilting Bella into their second kiss. I'm disgusted.

Other reread notes:
- I'm more annoyed at Edward being overprotective this reread - the not sharing about Victoria I don’t love because you should be honest with your partner, but the not trusting Jacob to not be violent was what got me. How different is Edward controlling his thirst around Bella from Jacob controlling his anger around Bella? If there’d been just one scene where Jacob shifted close to Bella without meaning to I would even get it then, but as it is he’s only shifted when he’s safely away from her. Edward keeping Bella from seeing Jacob - I'm disgusted as an adult at the thought of a partner keeping me from seeing a friend. As a 12 year old when I read this though? Your parents can and do (or should) keep you from doing things you want to do because they understand the danger better than you. I’m wondering if that’s why Edward’s behaviour didn’t seem that alarming as a child. But again, as an adult, HORRIFIED!
---Update: Actually Edward changes his tune SO much SO fast I see why young Kelsey thought nothing of this. He’s very quickly perfectly unbothered as he should be, and as is way more attractive than a jealous partner
- Don’t know any other book that includes so many of the protagonist’s dreams in it
- Forgot how DISGUSTING the imprinting is. ‘Brother’ -> friend -> lover is just grooming plain and simple. Gag. Hard to read
---And as someone else mentioned - Rosalie says Emmett reminded her of her friend’s baby and that’s why she saved him. Coupling both of these (especially the imprinting, that’s an actual crime) and Edward’s reference to Bella’s classmates as children in the first book, many examples of disturbing romanization of children
- Charlie simping for Jacob is unbearable “That’s not very attractive behaviour, Bella. Forgiveness is divine.” What in the Morman???? Does he even know what Jacob was apologizing for?? For wishing Bella was dead lmao
---And what is WITH Bella being Charlie’s parent?? Renee was described as incompetent but does Charlie not feel the least bit guilty that his teenage daughter is cooking his food, washing his dishes, laundering his undies??
- Edward linking virtue/purity before marriage as if tainting that might hurt Bella’s soul is wild?? Is that even what Mormons believe? I thought it was just sinful, not that it would cost you your soul. Maybe I'm too far removed from my time in Catholic school but that was a wild train of thought
