So this is a book that is about how Morrigan grows now that she's a student of Wunsoc and learning about her talent, right? Not as much as it should be really.

I still really love this series, even though I feel like this book really does Morrigan a bad turn. I mean it makes sense given the world of Nevermoor, but I so totally feel that people should have handled her situation better. It just seems that most everyone reacts in the worst way possible, except for the characters we already know and love, like Jupiter, the hotel staff, Hawthorne, and even Cadence. The Wunderous Society just doesn't quite live up to its name. While Morrigan does grow some over the course of the book, it's not often due to the Wunderous Society.

I feel like this book also expands more on Nevermoor and what it is like there. It's by no means exhaustive, but I feel it does give us some information about various aspects of life in Nevermoor. How the Wunderous Society is split between the Mundane and the Arcane Arts, some of the peculiarities to navigating Nevermoor, and even seeing more Knacks in general. We also get some information about Wundersmiths, but I feel that its hard to know how much of what you get in this book is the truth and how much is fabrication.

I also enjoy the weaving of Morrigan's school issues with the larger darker plot of the book. While Morrigan's main struggle is school and how awful it is, there is something bigger going on in the world of Nevermoor that she gets drawn into. People are turning up missing in Nevermoor, even Wunderous Society members, and Morrigan gets drawn into this as her school life and this plot intertwines in unexpected ways.

While I can't say I was thrilled about the way the book went and how it treated Morrigan, I still enjoyed the journey. Morrigan does grown and develop even though she's not given an easy path to follow or even given much of a chance to grow and develop. By the end things look like they may be on the right track for Morrigan, but then again one could have said that at the end of last book.

Overall, I did really enjoy Wundersmith. It always made me want to read more and see what was going to happen next. I wish that Morrigan was given more of a chance to grow and develop in this book, but I still thought the book's path made sense, even if it was discouraging to read through. I'll just be hoping to have that wish fulfilled as I move on to the next book in the series. ...more "
