“He shook his head. “Ona calls it the modern man’s addiction.”
I scrunched up my face. “And what addiction is that?”
“The destination addiction.” He gave me a long patient glance. “It’s an obsession with the idea that happiness is in the next place, the next job, or the next partner.
“Well, maybe it will be,” I said.
“No, Chloe. People always tend to think that if only this or that would happen, then they would be happy. But they never are for long because no person, promotion, weight loss, journey, exam, or amount of money can bring you happiness long-term. Once you achieve it you’ll already be looking to the next destination.”
“So what are you saying?”
“That until you give up the idea that happiness is somewhere else, it will never be where you are. »”

“Which act would you prefer for tonight?”
His questions broke through my musings. I was all too glad for the interruption. “What do you mean?”
He shrugged. “There’s the new lovers act, the friends-who-fuck act, the swingers act, the gold-digger and sugar-daddy act, the fighting couple act—”
“What about a platonic friendship act?” I interrupted.
He looked at me as if I’d finally spoken a language he couldn’t understand. “Is that a joke?”
...
“Then come.” Ian extended his arm with a hint of a grin. “I’ve decided our act tonight will be the fighting couple. Shouldn’t present too much of a challenge, should it?”
I felt a wry smile tug at my mouth. “I think we’ll manage.”

“Kane would know. He’s smart.” I tapped the side of my head with my finger. Magnus wagged his tail. “Smart and sexy. Smexy. Kane is Smexy.” I giggled again. I could see why trolls loved this stuff. It was awesome.
Grabbing the box, I slammed the safe shut. Oh, damn. I hadn’t put the Yliaster crystal back in the safe. I began to twiddle the safe’s dial.
I had no idea what the code was.
“It’s on the tongue of my tip,” I grumbled, glancing at Magnus.”

“« A bit of useful information. My name is Victoria “call me Vicki” DeVine. I used to be Mrs. Yorick Dane, but giving up my married name was one of the conditions of my receiving valuable property—aka The Jumble—as part of the divorce settlement. Apparently the second official Mrs. Dane didn’t like the idea that someone else had had the name first. Fortunately, she didn’t seem as possessive about Yorick’s Vigorous Appendage. I could have told her that a couple dozen other women had had it before she took possession. But it wasn’t likely that she would keep solo possession of the appendage for long, so let her figure things out the hard way like I did. Of course, if she had been one of those indulgences, then she already knew the signs and might be able to nip them in the bud. »”
