Sylvie grabs my arm, and purrs, “Hot damn, Rod. When did you get muscles?”
“Hallmark.”
Sylvie giggles and releases me to go to the water cooler. Wilder isn’t so subtle, watching Simone since I’m in her ZIP code. If he only knew how much I’m there.
Sylvie asks, “What’s going on, Simone? You sick?”
“Something like that.” When Sylvie takes a sip, Simone asks, “Have you ever had a threesome?”

I turn from the counter. Wearing his police uniform, Tesco morphs his flirty smile into a confused smirk. “Rodwell?
“Rumor has it.”
His annoying, perpetual grin widens. “What are you doing here, man? Don’t tell me you’re surfing some ink now. Something like Care Bears on your arm? Maybe a softball with a smiley face? That’d be cute.” What a fucking canoe of douche.

Brandon checks his watch and says, “Amos is out of town, Crick is on vacation, and almost everyone is here. Let’s give another minute—”
“I’m here!”
That voice.
I swing my head just as a flurry of platinum hair and blue bounces into the conference room to the beat of her eager footsteps.
Shasta huffs as she crosses her arms and leans toward me to whisper, “Looks like your slutty stalker is here.”

I hear their pity at the table. How Shasta snowed me and laughed about it. How I was too dense to figure it out.
My body shakes as I hold Birdy tighter, knowing I’m losing her all over again.
Val asks, “Greg, do you need a minute?”
“Uh… I… Um…” The judgment they hurdle toward me sears my damn skin, but Simone’s hatred incinerates what’s left of me.

As Simone’s hands move over me, I pant for another reason. With her lips brushing my ear, she inhales against my ear, asking, “Is that a challenge?”
Her hands slip down the front of my shirt until they hit my belt buckle. Simone bumps her hips against my ass, and her tits press against my back. Yeah, I’m done. I’ll have to beat off in a bathroom stall.

Simone looks at me. “There’s no way you’re helping me out of the goodness of your heart. Am I supposed to climb on top of you and ride you whenever you snap your fingers?”
“If getting your money is worth it.”
She laughs. “You’re no alpha. It’s a stretch to call you a beta. And I’ll always have the upper hand. You could never turn down my pussy.”
Bending, I go to her ear. “Oh, yeah? I just did.”

I shrug. “Maybe at first. But she’s collecting dicks like she’s casting a porno.”
Instead of scolding me, she says, “Then make sure yours wins the role.”
I laugh because this can’t be my mother. “What the hell? I had the lead role, but she fired me.”
“Try again. You can’t give up. Even if you’re not together, put yourself back into the running.”
“Can you just encourage me to whore it out with one-night stands?”

Stopping at the second-floor door, I inhale, squeezing my right hand into a fist and gritting my teeth. What the fuck am I doing here so soon? I’m not ready to re-enter the white-collar workforce. I should’ve stayed in Durham. Even though I was a crappy bartender, I was far away from this old life of mine. No matter how much I hated that job, I want my other shitty life back. “Fuck it.” I yank open the door.

A week before his graduation, Jared cornered me one last time.
“Will you miss me, Kit Kat?”
“Yes.”
“Will you think about me?”
I couldn’t lie. “Every day.”
He grinned. “I promise I’ll call you in a few days.”
My own smile was unanticipated. “Okay.”
Jared graduated and moved away to college, never calling me. I thought I had fallen in love with Jared, but he left. I had meant nothing to him.

I brush past Adam Beckett and out of my room. Dash shuts the door, trailing me in a rush. “Where’s the fire?”
“Does your mouth have a damn leak?”
“What? Your dad’s a nice guy. Why couldn’t he go to dinner with us?”
Opening my driver’s side door, I glare at him over the roof. “Are you serious right now, or are you having a stroke? Because if you are, I’ll leave you here for an ambulance to pick up.”

Rod fidgets frustrated and restless. “Go back to Richmond. I’m beyond help.”
“I don’t believe that statement.”
“You weren’t there.”
“Did something occur at the Halloween party?”
“No. Almost.” He sighs, and his blinking eyes water. “Yes.”
“I saw you dancing.”
"Dancing. If only.”
“You danced with Ali. Did things go further?”
“A little. But she made me do it.” His face and voice harden. “I’m used to that.”

“You think I’ll give up easily?” Amos laughs. “Then you underestimated me.”
“I’m not surprised you’d sink this low.”
“When do you get a break?”
“I can never catch one of those fuckwads.” I set the bourbon bottle down with a bang that vibrates through my arm. “I have nothing more to say to you.”
“I beg to differ. You want to talk about it here, then? Fine. I believe it’s because of a certain woman. Or two.”

“I’ve learned that sex is not just to get off. My desire for you is a serious hunger, not useless coercion.”
“Greg Rodwell is getting all flowery and shit.”
“Well, I’m in love.”
I smile and whisper, “Me too.”

“You can leave now, Amos.”
He shakes his bald head with the Members Only beard. “Nope. I have planning to do.”
“For your exodus? Have a pleasant trip. If you go now, I won’t cry too hard.”
“Business plans.”
“I’m pretty sure you know what it means, Rod.”
Candi laughs. “Rod? Did he just insult you?”
“In a thousand ways.”
Amos grins like a great white, which he barely passes as a roadie for that useless band.
