“This you have to understand. There's only one way to hurt a man who's lost everything. Give him back something broken.”
What a great beginning. Donaldson has grown to be a very favourite author. His characterization, dialogues and powerful prose are so compelling. He is the closest to Bakker I can think of in these aslects

If you can stomach the bleakness and terrible stuff that characters do to each other in The Gap it a fantastic story

I urge everyone who likes Berserk to read Bakker.

Odd, I really love a lot about the three Malazan books I read but...they wore me down

I do not know why people often associate those two. they are not very related. Very different kind of storytelling. Bakker is much more focused and intimate. Tight cast with relationship dynamics that remind a lot of the Berserk.
I am not a fan of Malazan though I have read five books. I do not plan to read more. Tired of the many characters and plots. I found many of them very uninteresting. I also did not like how convenient is everything. Anything can happen. People die and resurrect. People are gods. Demigods. Immortals. Places, items etc the same. Everything is possible thats why nothing happening had any impact on me

It was very frustrating for me too cause I wanted to like it but every time I tried I read less and less and I finally decided it is not my cup of tea. First time I quit at book five and another two tries I quit at book three.
