He is brushed by the indifferent glances of a hundred strangers, and looks upon them with equal disregard….He is consumed with his sense of loss, of solitude. There comes surging forth the memory, not of Susan, but of love. Once, he lived within a safe warm capsule of required feeling; now, he is adrift.

Matthew has never told Alice that he loves her, nor has she required it. What is between them is not love, but something cordial, mutually sustaining, that can be taken up or relinquished at will, without obligation. It is better than nothing, and entirely unsatisfactory to any who have known better.

He is an intelligent man, and a man of compassion, but he can hear of a massacre on the other side of the globe and wonders as he listens if he remembered to switch on his answering machine. He is aware of this, and is disturbed.
