Late at night I found myself, as I knew I should, on the beach. The air was calm, the night particularly beautiful. It would have been entirely possible for me to walk out into the sea. That I did not do so was the result of a sense of duty to myself. I wanted to know the rest of the story, however it might turn out.

My very first impression of my very first Brookner: wow, that's some olympic-level writing. Makes you realize how much mediocre prose I've been reading recently. Not sure about the subject matter yet. But this is some smart shit

This is a weird one so far, the biggest theme I can discern is the girl's fantasy about freedom from taking care of her meek aging unhappy mother and not wanting to be burdened by her. I suspect we'll have a "be careful what you wish for" wisdom later, maybe? Like what if something happens and your annoying mother will be not there for you and you discover nobody else really care about you? That's my theory-- this feels like a lonely book.
I think that is just a typical Brookner theme - I mean the dependant relationship and desire to escspe it. Her books are mostly about lonely people longong for connection or to escape the connections thst they do have.
