ok so I was harassed in the comments under my review and when I playfully told him to fuck off the guy flagged me to the goodreads and goodreads penalized me, while leaving harassing comments live even though I blocked him. interesting... should I close my comments or it won't help? can anyone flag anything even if it's a joke? asking friends with experience

Emma Deplores Goodreads Censorship Ugh that sucks, sorry that happened! From what I recall Goodreads doesn’t delete comments on your review because their position is you can do it yourself if you want it deleted. I have thought about closing comments but most of them are lovely. What I really want is to be able to close them on specific reviews. There are only about 5 I really just want closed and it’s annoying that it’s all or nothing.

Thank you, Emma! <3 I am mostly annoyed at goodreads for the way they dealt with this situation. I don't really want to close them cause I like interesting people here, but the way bullies can weaponize the community guidelines is not so cool. Especially on my review, I am not going around pestering others, the whole situation is ridiculous.

Emma Deplores Goodreads Censorship Yeah agreed, if somebody shows up on your review to show their ass, telling them to fuck off seems like a normal response, and I've definitely seen other people do it. They must have an intern who's just looking at naughty words and not context or something.

Debbie Y Hey nastya, sorry it happened to you! I’ve been there too with one of my reviews that brought all the Karen trolls foot-stomping and raging. It was a troll convention, basically. I rarely flag anyone and find it overall funny when people get so worked out over a book review. I don’t know if closing your comment section would feel right. What if someone wants to write something positive? In my case, when I (and others) replied to the trolls, not only that they flagged our replies, but also had one account closed. Funny how they’re allowed to talk shit but when you answer them they run crying to the GR police like little bitches.

nastya Thanks for your comment, Debbie, I suppose the adult thing to do is just to block and delete their comments without a reaction. but what if it happened on a cranky day?! 🙂 the funny thing is that my account is like 12 years old, plenty friends interactions, and here this harasser who has zero friends does this to me. and that’s their reaction? doesn’t feel fair to me

Meike GoodReads does not comply to EU law: A similar thing happened to me, so I asked GoodReads repeatedly to explain their decision to moderate content in that way (the EU-DSA gives us as users of intermediary platforms that right), but GoodReads didn't even reply. In my case, it was the "Melania" review .... Fun fact: Trump basically calls the DSA censorship. *siiiigh*

The quality of the platform moderators (who mostly work under very difficult circumstances) differs vastly.

Left Coast Justin I remember that, and the guy definitely needed to, um, fornicate off. What a prick. No advice, though, since I've never encountered a problem like this.

Left Coast Justin What was the penalty btw?

nastya they told me that since it's my first strike they just deleted my messages, but now big brother is watching me :)

Jan-Maat I have only used blocking individuals, but I see people who have turned off comments cor non-friends. I saw your interaction with that person. I think at the time there were maybe six or eight comments on your review - if the moderator didn't have the minute necessary to read them all and to see what that person said to you then it seems pointless to have moderation.

message 11: by nastya (new)

nastya yes, the quality of moderation is bad— idk if it was done by a human or a model, and which one is worse.

message 12: by Nataliya (new)

Nataliya This is ridiculous from GR side. You can write back to them and clarify the situation as they seem to be knee-jerk reacting to anything flagged. I haven’t had this particular interaction with them, but they were responsive to other concerns. I wouldn’t be surprised if a model checks first, but a human may follow up if you respond.

Thin-skinned idiots who think they an say whatever they want but then get butt-hurt and run complaining to mommy when being told to fuck off really should not be indulged by the moderators.
