Marquise Haha, it's from around the same time, so the style gives that impression a bit too.

Take it for what it is, and don't expect much, is my recommendation. It has some silly stuff meant to be humorous that might not tick the box for you.

nastya not just style but the opening is quite similar, before Melville decided he is interested in a completely different book altogether. also both about the fast dying worlds. that are extremely manly. also i would claim there’s a quite a bit of homoerotism there, the first time our narrator sees the Virginian he is attracted to him physically. it’s almost funny how he describes how hot he is and then is like, every man AND WOMAN would be enthralled!
