Sam Quixote added a status update
GR deleted my 2016 review of Margaret Atwood’s terrible comic Angel Catbird Vol 1 for “violating community guidelines”. The only objectionable part of it that I can see is the use of the “R” word - and the fact that I have to use that term like that is so… lame. Anyway, I’m reposting it without that word because fuck censorship. But if you see my profile deleted from the site, know that it wasn’t my choice.

Wulf Krueger The "R" word that is often used as a pejorative to demean and dehumanize people with intellectual or developmental disabilities? That perpetuates negative stereotypes, stigma, and discrimination against people with disabilities, and is often used to belittle and marginalize them? The one many of us consider a hate word, similar to racial or ethnic slurs?

Sam Quixote I'm just guessing that's what it was because of course they didn't tell me specifically what the issue was:

"Hi Sam,

We have deleted your review of Angel Catbird, Vol. 1.

We are committed to maintaining a safe community on Goodreads, and we expect all members to abide by our Community Guidelines. Content that goes against our Guidelines or that negatively impacts our community is not permitted. We've included a copy of your review below for your personal records.

Please refrain from engaging in activity of this nature in the future to avoid being banned from Goodreads.

Sincerely,
The Goodreads Team"

I took out that word and reposted the review, but, if that wasn't the problem, then me reposting it could end up getting me banned, so I put up this status update in case that's what happened. We shall see...

Julie G I feel you. GRs recently sent me notification that they deleted my review of Shirley Jackson's THE SUNDIAL. They deleted it, without my permission, or any warning, and then "informed" me that it was actually a review of Stephen King's 11/22/63. No, it wasn't! They didn't even read past the first sentence of my review. After I complained, I received a computer-generated response, informing me that they were granting me permission to re-post my review, though the almost 200 comments in the comment thread could not be restored.
In case anyone is unclear, there are more robots in charge here than humans. I appreciate your courage to post your complaints publicly. As far as I'm concerned, we ALL must fight censorship, even if it isn't happening directly to us. I appreciate you being vocal about this.
(By the way--in case anyone is interested--24 hours after I made a public update on here about my frustration with the lack of notifications, 500 "followers" were removed from my profile. A perfect 500. . . as though someone hit -500 on a keyboard somewhere. If that doesn't give someone the willies, I don't know what does).

Julie G P.S. If you, or anyone reading this is interested in the exact specifics, I have re-posted my review of THE SUNDIAL (with their permission!!), with the exact comments that were made to me, in 2 emails, from GRs.

Julie G P.P.S. This exact sentence was used, in their follow-up response to me: Since your review meets our Review Guidelines, you are welcome to repost it.

Thanks. . . Overlord.
