The opportunity to share your thoughts, emotion, authenticity, with others, and perhaps inspire someone else, to illicit comment, to provoke response, or thought, or touch someone's life, or to teach, is the best thing about being a writer.

That is a great question. Sometimes I will open my computer and the words flow easily to the page. Other times, I open the computer, and the pause widens, and my thoughts struggle, and that is when I know the inspiration is not forthcoming. That is my signal to close the proverbial shop for a time. The writing has to be organic and natural, not forced. I fortunately have not had an extended period of writer's block.
