I hope you'll forgive my very late reply, Nick. I've been struggling to get on Goodreads for a while (entirely my own fault - changed email). First of all, thank you so much for your question, and I'm so glad you're enjoying the Geraldine Steel series! It's probably too late to answer now, but I'd say it doesn't really matter. Geraldine and Ian meet up in each of their books, but the stories are quite separate. I hope that answers your question. Leigh

500,000 at last report - but that's not up to date.

My latest book, Race to Death, was inspired by a visit to York. We were fortunate enough to be given a private tour of the Ebor Building by the race course Head of Marketing, who has invited me to sign copies of Race to Death at York Races this year, which is a huge thrill.

Writing a book is not about words on the page, but about thoughts and ideas. So far ideas haven't really been a problem for me. Quite the opposite, in fact. There are so many ideas bouncing around in my head, I can't imagine ever stopping writing

The manuscript for my ninth book, the seventh in the Geraldine Steel series, is ready to be sent to the editor so I'm now working on my tenth, which will be the third published in the Ian Peterson series. I plan to have the first draft more or less finished by October when I'm returning to York to carry out some more research for the series which is set in York.

This is something I'm frequently asked, and I could write a book on the subject. The most important advice I can give is to write what you enjoy writing. If you are thinking of submitting your manuscript to an agent or publisher make sure your manuscript is as good as it possibly can be. Remember you only have one chance to impress.

The best thing about being a writer, for me, is that I'm never bored. There is always some problem to work out, some character trait or plot twist to devise to ensure the narrative works. I'm lucky to earn my living writing fiction, but however rewarding it is to be published, the real thrill is the writing.

Probably the best cure for writer's block is a publisher's deadline. I've been very fortunate that my publisher likes to offer me multiple book deals, so as soon as one manuscript is written, I'm on to the next book without a break. Now that I'm writing two series, I'm delivering two manuscripts a year. It keeps me busy - and there's no time to worry about writer's block! For writers who don't have externally imposed deadlines, setting your own deadlines might help.
