This may seem obvious but "finish the book!" Many people start but give up because they get discouraged or lack confidence. You need to finish it. That first "vomit" draft is the toughest. Rewriting is much more fun. Promise! Another tip I always say is hire a professional editor to give your manuscript the once over. It's not cheap but it may make the difference between finding an agent and getting published or not.

Now that Seven Days In May is about to makes its debut, I've already outlined its sequel. I've also been focusing on screenwriting. I won the New Voices of Humanitas Prize last year and have been working on original television pilots. One of them is a detective series and I might turn that into my first crime novel.

The idea for Seven Days in May came from family history. My great-grandfather was a passenger aboard the doomed ocean liner but somehow managed to survive several hours in the water before being rescued. I never met him but his daughter, my grandmother, told me his story and I was forever captivated. I have a fascination with historic tragedies and the Lusitania is right up there with the Titanic. Over 1,200 people lost their lives as the ship sank in 18 minutes.
