Go for a walk and really think about what it is you're trying to convey.

The covers - I love seeing the creative covers that designers come up with for my books. And, seeing one's work being read and appreciated. Just the other day I came across a review of my Brutus of Troy book on this very website, by someone called Simon Clare, "I came away with a very clear appreciation of it all – I’ve never read anything quite like it". What a lovely thing for any author to read.

Publicising my Aeneas book. In the pipeline is something on 18th and 19th century Suffolk landscape artists, and, on a massively smaller scale than mighty Troy, the history of my own village, Callow in Herefordshire.

What's that quote - you stare at the computer screen until blood comes out of your forehead. No, the writing is easy, but working out the complexities of what you are writing about, when your subject is ancient myths and the material is often academic texts and papers, requires a dreadful amount of thinking. But I think it is worth it, in order to extract the relevant details from so much difficult material, find an answer, and present the reader with clarity.

As a genealogist I'm always looking for the longest family trees that exist, and one of the very longest in Britain goes back to the mythological Brutus of Troy. By the time my biography of Brutus was published (in 2015) I was already fascinated by, and hard at work on, tracing his own mythological great grandfather, Aeneas. And Aeneas has always mattered, to Rome, to Britain, and indeed to me, as an ancestor.
