I went to St George’s College, Weybridge; Durham University (studying Medieval history) and The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, Canterbury, where I became a professional genealogist. I have been a freelance genealogist since 2003. I try to bring all my practical skills in historical and genealogical research to my writing, which I hope gives it an edge over many professional writers, who are not also day-to-day researchers. Besides research and writing I am also an occasional broadcaster. My most recent T.V. appearance was on the Australian version of Who Do You Think You Are? with Barry Humphries, the genius behind Dame Edna Everage. Although our interview appears in the middle of the program, it was actually the last bit o ...more

Just the other day I came across a review of my Brutus of Troy book on this very website, by someone called Simon Clare, "I came away with a very clear appreciation of it all – I’ve never read anything quite like it". What a lovely thing for any author to read. (less)

Good reviews for In Search of Aeneas

Almost a year since In Search of Aeneas was published and I am pleased to have had some very positive reviews, including one just in from The Virgil Society:

"Adolph has read widely.... well worth reading" - Peter Pickering, The Virgil Society Newsletter, no. 39, September 2024

“As we watched on that evening, imagining Brutus gazing eagerly west, the setting sun sank and described a glittering path of reddened gold, dancing out westwards across the gentle waves. It was a path, and a destiny, that grew ever brighter, ever bloodier, as the precious moments passed. Then the sun sank out of sight and the afterglow began; first intense gold, then deep crimson. It was easy to visualise – even actually to glimpse – the last of Brutus’s ships clearing the promontory, the sails filling with the evening breeze, billowing out with their first precious taste of freedom.”

“Why did Poseidon take Palinurus’s life? Because, if they do not seek to explain the random cruelty with which death seizes our friends, families and ultimately ourselves, then myths about the gods serve no useful purpose whatsoever (from In Search of Aeneas, due to be published on 15 October 2023).”

“Nikopolis’s walls that we see now were built by the Byzantines, and seem vast; but then you realise that they encompass only a small portion of the original, Roman metropolis. If one ever feels in doubt of the scale of Augustus’s confidence and ambition, Nikopolis serves as an indelible reminder. Its size and grandeur, even after so long, are truly staggering. And, back when Nikopolis was still being built, Virgil turned Aeneas’s sojourn there into the city’s poetic genesis. (from In Search of Aeneas, due to be published on 15 October 2023)”
