R.L. Nolen What an excellent question. One mystery in my personal life would be...my husband had a great uncle who was found walking alongside a railroad track in the middle of a deep forest. The child wore only a diaper and was determined to be younger than three. The family took him in while police searched for family. No one claimed him.
It's a good mystery. He grew up and became a hard worker and good family man. The mystery of who he was or where he came from never solved.
R.L. Nolen It watched the child get closer to it's layered home. One step closer and it would be over for him, and only the beginning for the rest of its story.
R.L. Nolen I would choose to add myself to Charles Dicken's long list of quirky characters. I'd love to be friends with the odd lady with all the canaries.
R.L. Nolen There are so many books in my To Be Read pile. Up next on the list is Kate Atkinson's Big Sky. A lot of books on Kindle. What will I be reading in the summer? Almost exclusively suspense and murder mysteries.
R.L. Nolen Thank you for getting my book. I hope you enjoy it. Psychological suspense is my favorite genre. I read a lot of Ruth Rendell and wanted to write a book much like one of hers. I hope I came a little close. As to poetry, I don't read it very often. I wish you all the best with your book.
R.L. Nolen I've just completed a first draft of a YA set in 1970 Houston, TX.
R.L. Nolen Hi Hillary, there are a few. If you want to check out the HWH website at Houstonwritershouse.com they list the critique groups available. SCBWI-houston.org lists their critique groups on their site. There are a lot of authors up that way. I hope you find exactly what you need. Hope to see you at the upcoming mini-conference on November 8 with HWG.
R.L. Nolen Ha. Ha. Ha. I love your question. No, there is no chef so that's a good thing, right? I love to cook, too. Yes, there is thyme involved and no it doesn't have anything to do with cooking.
R.L. Nolen That is an excellent question.

The first character I worked hard at was Charles, of course. He presented quite a problem because I needed to delve into learning all I could about psychotic personality disorders, first. Second, I had to have him have a reason to have this personality disorder. He was a challenge and I like a challenge.
But I have to say that my favorite character became, over time, Annie. She is very young, yet she is very intelligent and very plucky. I like her best.
R.L. Nolen Seeing that my readers enjoy my story. That's what it's all about.
R.L. Nolen Learn the craft first. Write and write and write and then rewrite it half a dozen times whilst attending a good critique group. A GOOD critique group will set you in your place and tell you exactly what they think and exactly what you NEED to change. Because every writer LOVES their own words. But a good critique group will tell you how awful your words are to the "virgin ear" (an editor) and this good critique group will tell you how to get better. This is what every writer needs. Amen. (sorry for all caps but there is no html option here for underlining.)
R.L. Nolen Good questions. I don't actually need inspiration. I need time. I have a head filled with a million ideas and have to keep reminding myself that one must eat an elk, one bite at a time. (I would have said elephant, but the idea is revolting.)
R.L. Nolen I didn't realize that the affliction I am blessed with is called Anglomania. I mainly read British (Scottish, Irish, and English) authors. I watch BBC America, I watch Masterpiece Theater, Masterpiece Mysteries, and Netstream British murder series such as Midsommer Murders (just finished all the years of the entire series). I have done, for years. And years. You get the picture.

So to answer the question, I went to the library in the little city I lived in and asked for more British authors because I'd read all the ones I could fine. The answer was - after much computer searching - I'd read them all. So I decided to write one that would be fun to read for other people who were like me.

That's it.
