One morning, I woke up and found that I had aged thirty years

everyone treated me as if nothing was unusual.

For the first time in years, I did not read any books this past summer.
I was very busy with two new essays I have been writing, as well
as visits with children and grand children. I did watch several
episodes of "Breaking Bad," which has really wonderful dialogue.
Two summers ago (2018), I read "Pachinko" and "The Tartar Steppe."

Writers vary greatly in the source of their inspirations.
For many of my books, I am inspired by an idea that I
want to pursue, such as our desire for permanence in
an impermanent universe. Sometimes I am inspired by
meaningful experiences I have had, such as my immersion
in Cambodia over many years -- out of which came my
latest novel THREE FLAMES.

I have spent the last 15 years working in Cambodia with an organization
called the Harpswell Foundation. Our mission is to empower a new generation of women leaders in Southeast Asia. The novel emerged from
hearing many stories over the years.
