William
William asked Alan Lightman:

First and foremost, Professor Lightman, thank you for all of the tremendous writing you've share with us. Second, please accept my apologies if I missed the explanation directly or through context, but are the "Three Flames" that Ryna urges her daughters to keep, as well as her own struggles in meeting and forming a relationship with Touch Pheng based on the the Three Universal Truths in Buddhism?

Alan Lightman No, the Three Flames are found in a traditional book of instructions
for girls and women called the Chbab Srey. This is discussed in
the Nita chapter of the book.
