I had many disappointments along the way, but I knew I had a story to write that had to get out. That kept me motivated to keep working on it. I think it's persistence, and not necessarily talent, that separates published authors from non-published authors. How many would-be authors have given up before publication could happen?(less)

Permission by Elissa Altman

I appreciate this book about one important aspect of writing difficult and complicated family stories: that of permission. As memoirists, we don't need permission to write family stories but this can cause hard feelings. This book tells a writer how ...more

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been to Hawai'i. It is important to understand the native Hawai'ian population when we as haole (non-natives) go there. When we tourists stay at the fancy resorts, do we ever think whose land has been ta ...more

Prior to my trip to Ireland I wanted to read another book about The Troubles, and this one didn’t disappoint. There’s a lot of overlap with Say Nothing, but this one is more focused on one man who became a spy for the British. I learned a lot more ab ...more

Most of us fall into the trap of the “allure of elsewhere.” Wherever we are, there must be someplace better. Speaking for myself, I envision myself in different places when life around me gets stressful, tedious, or just plain not fun. It’s easy to f ...more

Classic Alison Bechdel! I could not put this book down. I'm a binge-reader of Alison's books. I was forced to put it down because I had a couple of other books I needed to finish first. But I read the last half in one setting. I loved her satirical t ...more

This book is fine for what it is -- your standard music autobiography. I enjoyed learning about Lee's early years. He includes a lot of family history, which is traumatic. In the middle you have the requisite goofy band stories. Then the tragedies su ...more

“Stories weren't just make believe, all Dr. Seuss and Mother Goose. I saw a circle: first life, then death. Spring, summer, fall, winter. Blue sky and storms and quilts of cold clouds occupy the same space but at different times. Memories and stories help you rebuild. Things most precious to you may be gone, lost to the wicked wind, but you remember what had been, and you move on.”
Rachael Hanel, We'll Be the Last Ones to Let You Down: Memoir of a Gravedigger's Daughter

“Mom was the midwife who delivered stories to me.”

“Maybe you’ve made something mediocre—there’s plenty of that in any artist’s cabinets—but something mediocre is better than nothing, and often the near-misses, as I call them, are the beckoning hands that bring you to perfection just around the blind corner.”
