Eva’s Byte #242: Under the Influence of Absent-mindedness

Is your focus purely on the task at hand, above all else?

The absent-minded professor is one of those familiar, stereotyped fictional characters whose academic brilliance is undermined by forgetfulness, blunders, and/or obliviousness to surroundings.

Separate and apart from carrying out responsibilities and obligations where I need to be on top of my game, I am often under the influence of absent-mindedness in my capacity of Indie author.

Secluded in my office and sitting at my desk in readiness to write, absent-mindedness exerts its influence through obliviousness:

I’ve either forgotten to turn on the oven, or have left something in there too long.

Enveloped in thought, the constraints of time elude me.

On the road, behind the wheel, wayward thoughts pertaining to character dialogue or plot twists intrude. Of course, I force these distractions to take a back seat while I’m driving.

While pushing a shopping cart in the supermarket, absent-mindedness navigates, while I’m lost in thought.

Thus far, the influence of absent-mindedness has not manifested itself in forgetfulness or blunders. I justify my obliviousness as a means of focusing on writing without becoming easily distracted.

*Since creative endeavors are cerebral undertakings which continue to incubate and maturate wherever we may be, absent-mindedness enables our ideas to flourish.

It goes without saying—do not disturb!

Eva’s Byte #303 – Oddities

Inquiring minds never cease in their hunger to acquire more information. In my case, the buck doesn’t stop there. I also enjoy acquiring oddities. Perchance you do too.

Under the influence of my own predilections, peccadilloes, and preferences, I collect them on a need-to-acquire basis.

A jackalope is one such oddity which piqued the curiosity of my inquiring mind. Having stumbled upon the “existence” of a jackrabbit with antelope horns in a short story based on travels along Route 66, I wanted one. Hence, I hunted online for this souvenir and nabbed a critter at Wall Drug Store, a roadside attraction itself, established 1931 in South Dakota.

I’m glad I did because the furry black one I acquired appears to be an endangered species. Instead, I espied a poly resin jackalope statue for $4.99, and a head mount jackalope for $199.00 which sold out, mind you.

In my capacity of a writer, the latest oddity in a string of many I’ve researched for my Contemporary work in progress, is that of the Colt Python 1969 firearm model. Consequently, I reached the butt end of drafting Chapter 66 in Part 3, arriving at 1,156 words.

*May each of us embrace our traits of oddness which foster imagination and creativity.

My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.

Eva’s Byte #306 - Here, There, and Everywhere

The title of a love ballad from the 1966 Beatle album, Revolver, pretty much sums up the location of my reading glasses. Pairs of spectacles in various strengths are strategically placed in every room, without exception.

My optometrist suggested 1.0 for night driving and television viewing.

I peer at my computer screen through a pair of 2.0 lenses.

If I’m reading, 2.75 suffices.

I nab a pair in the 3.25 range when I work with the fine print of crossword puzzles.

In the capacity of writer, I’m drafting my Contemporary work in progress using Times New Roman print style at a 16-point font. My document is zoomed 90 percent.

I can see my way clear—literally as aforementioned, and literarily as I envision the sequence of events in Chapter 68 of Part 4.

For sure, writers need imaginative vision to foresee how their story will unfold from start to finish. Also, of great importance, writers must have keen eyesight for proofreading and editing their draft pre-publication.

Whatever you set your sights on, may twenty-twenty foresight showcase your finished product in the best light.

*My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.

Eva’s Byte #349 – Home Sweet Home

“Home is where your story begins.” Annie Danielson

On the home front:

As the number of COVID cases continues to ramp up on a daily basis at an alarming rate, and as I’ve gotten a taste of how bitterly cold January can be, home is where it’s at for me. It’s a given my days of foraging for sea glass are behind me—unless a gift horse of low tide on a sunny morning/midday of at least 50 degrees occurs.

In the meantime, I’ve taken up crafting apple pomanders which I’d written about at length in Eva’s Bye #346. Thus far, a half-dozen are in the curing stage prior to decorating and gifting. Winter is the perfect season to undertake a project of this nature. Because I find it necessary to keep busy at all hours of the day, this endeavor has taken on a life of its own as a gesture for extending goodwill.

On the story front:

Home is the primary setting for my Contemporary work in progress—a guesthouse in the seaside community Charlestown, Rhode Island. I’m currently wending my way through Chapter 5. A story which sprouted from a few scatterbrained seeds has grown untamed, thanks to characters who are leading me on a wild-goose chase.

*May your home be a safe haven where love, laughter, harmony and creativity abound within its confines.

My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.

Eva’s Byte #352 – Cost-Prohibitive

From a writer and crafter’s perspective, the cost of producing a product may be too high to create a demand for it—or, earn a profit.

I’m experiencing this firsthand with my apple pomander enterprise. Mind you, I’m not even factoring in the tedious task of clove poking, or the time involved in covering the entire surface area of each apple.

Materials:

Apple @ $1.69 - $.199 per lb.

16 oz. Bag of Cloves - $17.03

2.5 oz. Jar Ground Cinnamon - $1.18

.5 oz. Apple Cinnamon Essential Oil - $6.95

36 sq. ft. Cheesecloth for Wrapping - $11.95

1 Skein of Jute Twine for Tying - $5.99

5-Bar Metal Towel Rack for Apple Curing - $39.95

1 Spool Red Ribbon - $1.97

1 Pkg. 10 Pine Cone Red Berry Picks - $19.99

Pkg. of 10 Shipping Boxes - $9.99

Truly a labor of love for gifting each pomander to a worthy recipient, doing the math for this cost-prohibitive factor doesn’t enter the picture. It’s the joy of spreading goodwill.

Turning the Page:

Generally speaking, a writer/self-published author pays for a book cover design, editing, and formatting. The trending retail price for an Indie eBook is between $.99 and $4.99.

Taking into consideration, the likelihood of irregular sales, one might very well construe our literary endeavor as cost-prohibitive.

From my perspective, monetary gain isn’t the reason behind my motivation to write. For me, each book sale represents reader interest. Even more intrinsically rewarding, is the time a reader takes to write an honest review.

At this juncture, I’m approaching the finish line for Chapter 6 of my Contemporary Work in Progress.

*May each of us continue to enjoy our creative endeavors for the immeasurable joy and satisfaction they bring.

My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.

Eva’s Byte #372 – Raindrops Could Have Fallen on My Head

…in the guise of wastewater dripping from the drainage pipe located along the hidden passageway from the third to first floor.

You might say the muck stopped here at my juncture on second floor above the commode through an aperture in the light/fan on the ceiling.

It’s not the first, second, or third time I’ve had a close encounter with varying degrees of intensity in the bathroom. Last year’s mishap necessitated cutting a section of the ceiling to get a better look at the main pipe.

The good news is that management and maintenance are quick to respond and remedy any situation with promptness and courtesy. During one such event, my entire bathroom was renovated: tile flooring; brand new plumbing fixtures and cabinetry.

Point is, there’s always something, whether ongoing or occasional, which stems the flow of one’s creative outlet.

In my capacity of a writer, the words are flowing in Chapter 14 (654) of my Contemporary work in progress. To fulfill my requirements in fabricating a backstory which takes place during the early 1950s, I’ve researched Superman episodes in DC Comics.

*May any creative roadblock amount to a detour rather than a deterrent.

My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.

Eva’s Byte #474 – What’s the Big Idea?

When it comes down to storytelling, the spark from a big idea fuels the writer’s imagination to create fiction with conviction.

Fuel for thought:

It’s no guarded secret, the big idea behind Etta’s Fishing Ground, my novel in the genre of Contemporary, took hold when I happened to scroll by a controversial post on social media pertaining to the topic of marital infidelity. Essentially, the question was, "If you discovered your best friend's husband with another woman, would you tell your bestie?"

The big idea fueling my current Contemporary work in progress sparked from a local news item pertaining to parents who jeopardized the safety of their child by exercising poor judgement. Of course, I’ve taken the big idea to go off on my own tangent in an entirely different direction.

I’m at the last stretch in drafting chapter 58 (1090 words thus far). One or two more chapters left to go.

*May the spark from a big idea fuel our creativity.

My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.
