Once Upon A Fabulous Time... by R.M. Gauthier

“One of the most important relationships we have, is the relationship we have with our mothers.” (Iyanla Vanzant)

For better, or worse!

An Indie author whose preferred writing genre is Contemporary Women’s Fiction, I hit the mother lode exploring these complexities, as such, in 'An Enlightening Quiche'. If the shoe fits, my character wears it: abandonment, contention, dysfunction, entitlement, expectations.

A smattering of enlightening tidbits pertaining to Augusta, the town siren, who has a bone of contention with her mother.

Like mother, like daughter?

From Chapter 1:

Her circumstances shrouded in mystery, I misconstrued the constellation of my mother and misjudged her harshly, much to my own detriment. Motherless and mistrustful of her motives to call it quits, I underwent rites of passage typecast as resignation, resentment, and rebellion.

From Chapter 15:

Disclosure forced me to reconsider and redefine my pH level of self-preservation without forfeiting an assumed identity postured on aloofness, cynicism, and seductiveness— identical vanguards my mother adopted as her veneer to ward off alien invasions of the soul. What bittersweet irony in attaining a level of awareness signifying a mother and daughter personified concentric asocial circles, one gestating inside the other so as to be characteristically and charismatically indistinguishable!

The mother lode is a vein of raw material for writers to infuse conviction in their works of fiction.

Eva’s Byte #224: Graphic Details

The Naked Truth

An Indie author whose primary genre is Contemporary Women’s Fiction which I classify as “lit with grit,” I aspire to the treatise on the subject of mimesis cited in Aristotle’s Poetics. Simply put, human beings feel an urge to create literature that reflects and represents reality: Art imitates life.

Without elaborating on the story elements of character, plot, setting or dialogue as they pertain to art imitating life in my novels—I’m going to get “graphic”—as in autobio-graphic-al.

Graphic Details alluding to my fragrance obsession:

From 'Underlying Notes' (2008):

Carla: I don’t consider myself an addict any more than someone who fancies himself or herself a collector of fine art, wine, rare books, antiques, stamps, or comics. I view this pursuit as a noble enterprise to elevate my olfactory senses, satisfy momentary whims, relive memories, restore tranquility, or boost flagging energy. Above all, fragrance completes me.

Graphic Details incorporating the antiquated methods of bookbinding based on my college summer employment at a factory:

From 'An Enlightening Quiche' (2016):

Augusta: The antiquated method known as “folding” sustains the company’s longevity through the production and proliferation of leaflets whereby the folder creases each printed sheet into a trifold. Or, creases a printed sheet down the middle to create a booklet page called a “signature.” At the completion of a run, the signatures are arranged sequentially by the stitchers who feed the saddle-stitcher by piling up signatures until they’ve assembled a stapled booklet at the end of the mechanized cable line. The saddle-stitcher, by any other name, is Brulé Bookbinding’s Trojan workhorse!

Life, in all of its graphic glory, exposing the naked truth, enriches our artistic endeavors.

*What autobiographical details have you incorporated in the art from of writing?

Eva’s Byte #474 – What’s the Big Idea?

When it comes down to storytelling, the spark from a big idea fuels the writer’s imagination to create fiction with conviction.

Fuel for thought:

It’s no guarded secret, the big idea behind Etta’s Fishing Ground, my novel in the genre of Contemporary, took hold when I happened to scroll by a controversial post on social media pertaining to the topic of marital infidelity. Essentially, the question was, "If you discovered your best friend's husband with another woman, would you tell your bestie?"

The big idea fueling my current Contemporary work in progress sparked from a local news item pertaining to parents who jeopardized the safety of their child by exercising poor judgement. Of course, I’ve taken the big idea to go off on my own tangent in an entirely different direction.

I’m at the last stretch in drafting chapter 58 (1090 words thus far). One or two more chapters left to go.

*May the spark from a big idea fuel our creativity.

My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.
