Eva’s Byte #264: Island Hopping from Home

My latest pleasurable pastime while social-distancing and sheltering in place is that of island hopping. My first destination via armchair travel through You Tube has led me to Mackinac Island. (Pronounced MAK-in-aw) – Totally threw me!

On my bucket list of places to visit, inspired by the movie, “Somewhere in Time” (1980), filmed on location at the Grand Hotel on the island.

No time like the present to soak in the virtual sunshine of this popular tourist attraction located at the eastern Straits of Mackinac, between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas.

Whaddya know: motorized vehicles have been prohibited on the island since 1898. Modes of travel are either on foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage. While sitting back in my chair, I felt as though I were actually traveling by carriage headed toward the Grand Hotel.

For my own peace of mind, I’ll parlay my free ticket to visit Mackinac Island again through the lens of other videos.

In my capacity as writer, I’ve been hopping along the trails of my Contemporary work in progress, rounding the bend of chapter 48. The local, rural setting of Foster, Rhode Island is worth a detour off the beaten path.

*If you’ve read this far, my heartfelt appreciation. Whatever mode of travel you take, may the journey be enjoyable as your destination.

Eva’s Byte #359 – Taking a Hike

At the onset of the pandemic in 2019, with sanctions to stay put, I took up virtual travel. Last summer I sojourned on Mackinac Island in Michigan. My short stay at the Grand Hotel didn’t cost me a dime.

And, nowadays, to deflect the horrors of war for an hour, I’ve taken up virtual hiking. My first venture was a trek in the Grand Canyon along its South Rim on the South Kaibab Trail and across the Colorado River (4 kilometers). An undertaking over the course of two sittings, the two-hour experience of “living on the edge” was both breathtaking and thrilling.

As much as I take pride in exercising and walking on a daily basis, I would not have the stamina to endure hiking an arduous trail beset with the pitfalls of elevation changes.

Whereas, a virtual hike does not require hours of training in preparation. Nor does it require fuel consumption to arrive at one’s destination from near or far.

In my capacity of a writer, I’m blazing a trail through Chapter 9 (721 words thus far) of my Contemporary work in progress. Since the onset of this story, a pushy minor character has elbowed her way in, demanding more of a presence than I’d originally intended.

*May each of us safeguard our physical, emotional, and mental well-being by engaging in pleasurable pastimes.

My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.

Eva’s Byte #472 – An Avenue of Escape

“There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favorite book.” Marcel Proust

The Wonderful World of Oz by L. Frank Baum, springs to mind as one of my favorite childhood books. Considered the first official American fairytale and fable, I recall signing it out of my school library week after week in third grade so I could read it over and over. I loved it that much—still do. For me, it symbolizes the imagination’s unbound flight to magical realms where dreams come true on wings of belief and determination.

In the here and now, my time spent reading a book is tempered with adulting and writing my own books. At this juncture, I’m drafting the close of chapter 57 (1710 words thus far) along my Contemporary work in progress.

*May each of us find our avenue of escape inside the wonderful world of a book.

My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.
