Rod is the author of 15 nonfiction books (plus three for NASA) on his favorite subject, space exploration and technology. He tracks this fascination back to childhood, when his introversion led him to spend countless hours watching rocket launches, moonwalks and science fiction (which often led to truancy, countenanced by an understanding mother). While his contemporaries revered football players (basketball was not really a "thing" yet), he wanted nothing more than to become an astronaut. He now realizes that breaking into a sweat when it takes the elevator doors a few moments too long to open probably makes him a poor candidate for spaceflight.

While Rod actually attended seven colleges and universities in the search of the perfect major,

It's like good fiction... young guy (okay, a billionaire, but still) goes to USAF and NASA and says, "I'm going to build rockets to launch your payloads!" Industry says, "That's nice sonny." Ten years later he's doing so. Musk has accomplished much, with infusions of his own money, outside investment and NASA funds. Regarding Mars, he has a long way to go, and admits it. It's a huge undertaking, and he will need lots of help--again, he stated that he welcomes cooperation with other entities. His end goal is to create a new and parallel civilization--a backup of us--on another planet. No real business case there, just raw desire. I think that's fantastic. And, also like good fiction, I can't wait to see how this story ends!(less)

He's been a profound influence with his writing about the Soviet space program, and an invaluable resource!

I'm glad you enjoyed "Amazing Stories of the Space Age," and I have two sequels in the works that I'll announce here once they get moving.

Very much appreciate your comments!

The Blur of 2017 & Nudging Fame... Not.

How does one discuss the subjective passage of time without lapsing into cliches? One cannot. So I'll just do the best I can: so far, 2017 feels like cresting Everest in a T-shirt and floppies: a wonderful but exhausting effort, for which I am ill-equipped and under-resourced.

In this case, the equipment is time and the resources are, well, time. I completed three books las year, and will probably Read more of this blog post »

“There the crew would reside, either strapped into reclining metal chairs or with magnetic boots clanking around on a metal gridwork floor, nicely warmed by all the heat-generating vacuum-tube electronics necessary for the primitive computers, radios, and other necessary equipment.”
Rod Pyle, Amazing Stories of the Space Age

“The clouds that shroud the planet are sopping with sulfuric acid, and the temperature at its surface is over 800°F. The terrain looks like a shale-covered desert lit by lightning storms and drenched with acid rain.”
Rod Pyle, Amazing Stories of the Space Age

“Besides convincing readers of The Mars Project that such an undertaking was possible, it also attracted a major magazine to do a splashy series of articles based on von Braun's ideas, and brought him to the attention of Walt Disney, who engaged von Braun to work with his studio on a series of extremely popular TV shows and educational films about spaceflight (see chapter 6).”
