Dreams and Nightmares

3-4-10 Thursday 8:30 A.M.

I just had one of those deep and vivid dreams about working on the job from hell. It’s an old three-story Victorian in deplorable condition. The atmosphere is dark and foreboding, the people are hostile and menacing. The same reoccurring theme over the last 3 years.
      I have no work, but ironically I’m subjected to working on these awful jobs in my dreams, adding insult to injury – I don’t even get paid.

When I was binge drinking and went cold turkey – feeling like my central nervous system had been soaked in caustic acid – I would have these freakish dreams. The kind where the lunatics lumber.
      Lost in a dark and dank city, working on a rotting house from hell, that looked as if the local garbage truck pulled up on a ramp and dumped its load through the gaping hole in the roof. Trying to clean it up, make some repairs, and slap a coat of paint on walls.
      The owner appears, a crazed stubby woman wearing an extra-large soiled pillowcase as a dress, with cutout slots for her arms and head. A distorted face with a broad forehead and cheekbones. Delirious eyes which seemed to be changing shape as if controlled by some abhorrent force. Her small lips were sputtering out high-pitched chatter, pecking away at my brain. She was incomprehensible.
      And while I was working, her two little half rat, half demon dogs, were gnawing at my ankles. But to my relief, she put a leash on their choker collars and whipped them around off the ground and headed out the door. Then she got inside her rusted 1960's Volkswagen van and took off, with the dangling tailpipe screeching on the pavement, even more annoying than those little yapping pygmy demons and leaving a trail of sparks.
