Purpose for writing my cookbook

Companies spend millions of dollars developing products to put on the grocery shelves that are healthy and available to everyone. The products are often very generic because they have to appeal to a wide range of customer tastes. So why not take advantage of all their expertise and use their product as ingredients and just enhance or spruce them up with more flavor and unique tastes. I have developed recipes that use the common spices found in a kitchen as well as products purchased in the grocery store. Using the right combinations you are able to develop delicious and nutritious meals for your family without spending a lot of time in the kitchen and without breaking your pocket book to purchase the ingredients.

I am conscious of health issues and examine what ingredients are added to store bought products. I have some general rules that I tried to adhere to whenever I purchase a product. I always look for products that have less than 18% sodium content, preferable no Trans fats, and low carbohydrates.

This book takes common products found in the grocery store that are low in salt and carbohydrates and enhance them to add new and interesting flavors, yet keep them healthy. These recipes will reduce the amount of time spent in the kitchen so you can spend more time with your family or friends.

I have included a list of all of the cooking tools and seasonings that are used throughout this cookbook. Stock your kitchen using this list and you will never find yourself lacking the necessary tools or ingredients to make a healthy meal to share with others or enjoy yourself.  Watch for specials tips and recipes.

Happy Cooking….

Quick and Healthy Recipes from the Store Introduction

Over the years I have watched many TV cooking programs and read a lot of cook books. All of them have wonderful recipes, many of which I have tried. In many cases however, I found myself frustrated because many of the recipes required me to make the sauces or marinades from scratch using spices that I didn’t have or utensils I didn’t own.

This required me to run out and purchase the spices that I only used once, and then they sat in my cupboard until they were eventually thrown out. And on top of that, spices are expensive.

Worst yet, I’d get all the ingredients and start following the recipe and realize I didn’t have the right pan or some kitchen utensil. My kitchen’s very small and doesn’t have room for all the different size pans and utensils called for in the instructions. I end up improvising and either making too much or too little with what I have and the recipes never look like what’s shown in the book.

Cooking from scratch can take more time to make than it does to eat. With a full time job I don’t want to come home and spend time cooking, when I would rather spend it with my friends or family.

I decided to write this book because I am sure that I am not alone in regards to wanting to make a healthy meal that doesn’t take forever to prepare or require a lot of items that will be used once. All of the recipes are easy to follow and prepare.

Over the next several weeks I will provide you with quick and healthy tips for great meals for your family.

Roche Convention

The Roche Conventions is a fairly simple respond to a 1NT open.  The partner response of a 2 club overcall, shows 12-14 high card points, a balanced or semi-balanced hand and 3+ clubs.  All other responses are the normal response to a 1NT open.

Response by opener to the 2 Club overcall are as follows:

Response                  Meaning

Pass                               4+ clubs, no 5-card suit, and no interest in game.

2 Diamonds               Natural bid, 5+ diamonds, non-forcing

2 Hearts                       Natural bid, 5+ Hearts, non-forcing

2 Spades                      Natural bid, 5+ Spades, non-forcing

2NTs                             Natural bid, invitational to 3NT

Namyats Convention

Namrata is a convention to distinguish strong opening bids.  It shows 7-9 tricks in the hand.  This will help the responder to determine his bid, pass or go to slam.   Either way, there is a possible game and maybe a slam

Opening                             Meaning

4 Clubs                                7+ strong Hearts and 8-9 tricks

4 Diamonds                         7+ strong Spades and 8-9 tricks

4 Hearts                               7+ hearts and 7-8 tricks.  Weaker than the 4 Cubs opening

4 Spades                              7+ Spades and 7-8 tricks. Weaker than the 4 Diamond opening

With a supporting hand, the a slam is possible.

Michaels Cue Bid

Michaels Cue Bid

Michaels Cue Bid is used to show your partner that you have two suits with at least five cards in each.  There is no point minimum to use this convention.  However care should be taken with this bidding.  Vulnerability needs to be taken into account when using Michaels Cue Bid.

Michaels Cue bid works like this after an opening of 1 in a suit by your partner.

Overcall                                                             Meaning

A 2 Club overcall of 1 Club                          Shows at least five Hearts AND five Spades

A 2 Diamond overcall of 1 Daimond      Shows at least five Hearts AND five Spades

A 2 Heart overcall of 1 Heart                       Shows at least 5 Spades and at least 5 of one of the minor suits

A2 Spade  overcall of 1 Spade                     Shows at least 5 Hears and at least 5 of one of the minor suits

With this information the open will set the suit and level for the contract.

Jacoby Transfer

The Jacoby Transfer is used when a play opens with 1NT and his partner holds at least one five-card major suit (Hearts or Spades).  The responder naturally wants the contract to be in his long major suit.  With a weak hand he prefers to have his partner play the hand so he indicates which major suit he holds the five card major.  He wants to make sure  that the weak hand is the dummy, so as not to expose the high cards in the opener’s hand.

The Jacoby Transfer works like this (in response to an opener 1NT bid)

Response                    Meaning

2 Diamonds           Shows at least five Hearts; asking partner to bid 2 Hearts.

2 Hearts                   Shows at leas five Spades; asking partner to bid 2 Spades.

With this information the open will set the suit and level for the contract.

Astro Convention

All bridge played follows the rules of Contract Bridge, sometimes just called bridge.  Once bridge became a popular game, players have been trying to come up with ways to improve their bidding and playing the hand.  These are called conventions.   Some have work, and some have not.  Astro is a response convention for use with an opening bid of 1NT

The response to the opening bid of 1NT provides a description of the make-up of the responding partner.  The convention is used with the responder has 10+ points in his hand.

Overcall                      Meaning

2 Club                       Shows Hearts and a minor suit with a 5-4 or 4-5 split

2 Diamonds           Shows Spades and another suit with a 5-4 or 4-5 split

    2 Hearts                   Indicates 5 Hearts

    2 Spades                  Indicates 5 Spades

2NT                           Shows clubs and diamonds (usually a 5-5 split).  Opener should respond with his preference by replying with 3 Clubs or 3                                                Diamonds

With this information the opener can make his overcall and set the bid suit.
