Although they are technically fantasy, you won't find magic and wizards between the covers. I aim to write novels that feel like historical fiction, not fantasy. All of that said, I am delighted you have found me and would love to hear what you think of my books now that you have found them.(less)

The next novel is in the planning stage and I hope to write two more after that. I am just now finishing up a companion anthology which should be out later this year. I haven't expanded Jacobi's character, but I will definitely consider it now that you have mentioned him. :) He is a fun character.(less)

Writing: Returning Characters

Having just finished up the rough draft of Mercy, the third novel in the Novels of Rhynan series, I am now plotting the fourth novel. Tentatively titled Courage, this one is going to feature a lot of old favorite characters, but the chief of them, is my hero, Darnay. Readers have glimpsed him growing up as the series has gone on. So, here are some glimpses of what we have already seen.

Of the elves I must say I love the shadow elf the most! This story was well worth the wait and as always the books in Elves of Eldarlan has a happy ending. "

“I don't see why you two can't get along."
"It is a personality issue," Rathenridge muttered.
Dentin looked at him. No emotion, no reaction, simply bland observation. "Yours?”
Rachel Rossano, Duty

“He sounded far too eager, even for him. “What is wrong with it?”
Oris climbed the pen gate, launched himself from the top, and landed in the dirt of the aisle. “Why do you ask? What makes you think anything is wrong with it?”
He pulled an exaggerated grimace.
I laughed. “No farmer willingly hands over animals unless there is something wrong with them.”
Rachel Rossano, Rumpled Rhett

“Fine. The wife hates the goat. I traded for it for the novelty of goat’s milk, but it ran dry three weeks later. It is an old, cranky nanny who loves climbing on the roof and eating the thatch when she isn’t in the kitchen garden wreaking havoc.” Oris groaned. “I promised the wife I would kill it soon, but I can’t bear to do it to the creature. It can’t help it if it’s bored.”

“In the land of Ingary where such things as seven-league boots and cloaks of invisibility really exist, it is quite a misfortune to be born the eldest of the three. Everyone knows you are the one who will fail first, and worst, if the three of you set out to seek your fortunes.”
Diana Wynne Jones, Howl’s Moving Castle

“This book will prove the following ten facts:
1. A Goon is a being who melts into the foreground and sticks there.
2. Pigs have wings, making them hard to catch.
3. All power corrupts, but we need electricity.
4. When an irresistible force meets an immovable object, the result is a family fight.
5. Music does not always sooth the troubled beast.
6. An Englishman's home is his castle.
7. The female of the species is more deadly than the male.
8. One black eye deserves another.
9. Space is the final frontier, and so is the sewage farm.
10. It pays to increase your word power.”
Diana Wynne Jones, Archer's Goon

“Go to bed, you fool," Calcifer said sleepily. "You're drunk."
"Who, me?" said Howl. "I assure you, my friends, I am cone sold stober." He got up and stalked upstairs, feeling for the wall as if he thought it might escape him unless he kept in touch with it. His bedroom door did escape him.”
Diana Wynne Jones, Howl’s Moving Castle

“It was only when Shona, in sheer fury, turned the carnivorous sheep among them that they moved. They ran, some of them with charming little white sheep attached to their legs or backsides and the rest shouting about monsters.”
Diana Wynne Jones, Dark Lord of Derkholm

“He picked up the skull and knocked an onion ring out of its eye socket.
"I see Sophie has been busy again. Couldn't you have restrained her, my friend?" The skull yattered its teeth at him. Howl put it down rather hastily.”

Cool! :)

Rachel I love Moriah's name too! :) Thankfully we get to know her a bit better in the sequel. I am trying to get a couple of scenes with her in it. She is an interesting woman. One has to be to be married to Aiden (Rathenridge) after all. ;)

You liked Dentin so you will probably be glad to hear that he is the main character for the next book in the series. :) Tomas, Brielle, and Landry have all make appearances and I am not even halfway through yet. I am discovering that I really love writing sequels. :)

message 10: by Rachel

Rachel I love the name Brianna too. :) Brielle was named by a reader and the name has definitely grown on me. Wren's name sort of inspired her. When I thought of the name I though of a small woman with brown hair and an unassuming appearance with unusual character. Her eyes are her only truly remarkable physical feature, but they give insight into what she is truly feeling, as Tourth learned. ;)

Who is your favorite male character of the two books?

Rachel LOL!!! I can just imagine the chaos I have created inadvertently. I love that you enjoyed the book and Wren's character so much. :)

Rachel Me too. When I was writing her, I kept thinking how much I would love to have her confidence and ability to read people and situations. Oh, and having her set of skills with knives and weapons would be neat too. ;)

Rachel Ysa wrote: "Your books are awesome. ;o D Wren is my new favorite book ever. lol"

*happy dance* I am so glad you are enjoying them. :)

Rachel I feel well thanked, Ysa. ;)

I have a hard time summarizing my reading habits too. Though, I do prefer fiction to non-fiction...usually. :)

Rachel Ysa wrote: "Thank you for adding me, Rachel! It really made my day. :o D"

:) What kind of books do you enjoy reading?

Rachel Thanks for accepting my request. :)

Rachel Sarah wrote: "Thanks for adding me!!!"

Sarah Thanks for adding me!!!

Rachel Um... That is a hard question. :) Archer's Goon, Howl's Moving Castle, and all of the Chrestomancy books are all great. Homeward Bounders was one of the first books of hers that I read. The Dark Lord of Derkholm and The Year of the Griffin are also great. I know I am probably not helping you here. :) Sorry, there are too many good books to choose from.
