Paper and Pixels
I love books. Always have. They are objects of beauty; there is a feel to them. It's something that goes beyond the mere tactile. There is a perception that you are holding an object of value, something with a sense of permanence. This is one reason why my house is stuffed full of books; I just can't bring myself to throw any of them away - even the ones which I didn't particularly enjoy. It just seems so wrong.
And then along came Kindle. At first I actually refused to buy one; I remained true to the ideal that a physical book was not just the most user friendly platform available, it was also - in its own way - a thing of beauty. Why reinvent the wheel?
The Luddite inside me fought a commendable rearguard action before the inevitable happened and a brand new Kindle arrived in my mailbox. Like the cell phone before it - which I also resisted, though for different reasons - my Kindle soon became an indispensable part of my everyday life. I still add to my collection of physical books on a regular basis but my Kindle adds a level of convenience that paper and ink cannot match.
And finally, the Kindle has enabled me - along with many others - the opportunity to fulfill a dream and to actually write a book of my own. I just think that it's an incredibly cool thing to be able to do.
