AMY MAKECHNIE is the author of the middle grade novels, THE UNFORGETTABLE GUINEVERE ST CLAIR, TEN THOUSAND TRIES, and THE MCNIFFICENTS.

Like Guinevere St. Clair, Amy once set sail for the Mississippi on a large piece of Styrofoam (she didn't make it.) Like Golden from TEN THOUSAND TRIES, she's a little obsessed with soccer. And those funny children in THE MCNIFFICENTS? Well, she has a few - plus a miniature schnauzer that's really named Lord Tennyson (just like in the book).

Amy lives with her family in in a small New Hampshire town, and when she's not dissecting body parts with her A&P students, you might see her out running; that's where she works out her best plot points.

Thank you for not only reading Guinevere, but for leaving such a wonderful review - I appreciate it. These characters have inhabited my heart as well, and it makes me so happy when readers connect with them.

Gaysie was very much inspired by my mother-in-law who was a larger-than-life personality. She always championed the underdog, loved children, and was often seen as an odd, eccentric character - with a heart of gold. One morning she was burying her pet dog, which was wrapped in a black plastic bag. There was quite a dramatic funeral of sorts and I kept thinking, "this is my first scene" :). I definitely went off script as Gaysie became her own person, but the inspiration was there from the start. Sadly, my mother-in-law passed away suddenly before she ever read Guinevere. I so hoped she would be the one to read the audiobook. But I like to think she would have gotten such a kick out of reading about Gaysie Cutter and Guinevere St. Clair.

Thank you for the question!(less)

Greetings from a layover in the Chicago Midway airport. I have vowed not to spend any money on food but my flight is delayed and I’ve already eaten my Cheetos, banana, and apple. How long can I hold out?1 The person sitting next to me just pulled out a pulled pork sandwich…

I left Salt Lake City at 3 a.m. this morning after

“You were teeny tiny like a baby tomato. But you've gotten so big! And you're going to keep growing until you're bigger and stronger and taller. So instead of thinking about dying, how about you think about how awesome it is to be alive? Dad can't run right now, but you can. Dad can't jump right now, but Roma can! Before you die you get to LIVE!”
Amy Makechnie, Ten Thousand Tries

“The game isn't over until we stop fighting.
Like my ten thousand hours chart.
Ten thousand touches.
Ten thousand tries.
Ten thousand spectacular fails until you finally get it.
I'm trying so hard to stay positive. Just because I'm failing right now doesn't mean I'll stop.
Believe me, if I could, I'd never doubt again. I'd believe every single second and never stop.”
Amy Makechnie, Ten Thousand Tries

“We always have choices.
Choose to respond with our best selves.
Choose to focus on what we can control.
-Coach AKA The Hulk”
