Hi, Jeanann,

I'm so glad you've enjoyed reading about Rachel. She is close to my heart and I've loved writing her story.

Right now I'm trying to finish a standalone suspense novel with a different protagonist (a wildlife photographer -- if you like Rachel, you'll like this character too). After that, we'll see what happens. Unfortunately, my writing ground to a halt late last summer when I had to have major emergency surgery for multiple broken bones in my hips and lower back. Recovery has been very slow and painful. I am back to writing a a bit at a time, though, and I hope I'll have some news on the new book in the next few months.

Thanks for your note. Hearing from someone who enjoys my books always makes my day!

My advice is to put all that out of your mind and WRITE. Write the absolute best book you are capable of producing. Find a good critique group with insightful people whose opinions you trust and who will care more about helping you than crushing your ego. If you can afford an independent editor, hire one to give your book a professional edit. At the least, persuade someone you know who is good with grammar and punctuation to go through your manuscript. (Offer something in return -- dinner or lunch out, a delicious homemade cake of their choice if you're a talented baker.) Only when your manuscript is truly ready should you seek an agent or get involved in self-publishing. Remember that your first job is writing. So concentrate on writing. (less)

What year is it?

Technological changes have come at breakneck speed in the past few years, and I think a lot of people are starting to forget that we weren’t always so dependent on our gadgets and devices.

I’ve been startled several times lately by reader complaints that my first Rachel Goddard novel, The Heat of the Moon, seems “dated” and, indeed, “weird” because Rachel doesn’t carry a cell phone and doesn’t use Read more of this blog post »

Susan Cain
“Introverts, in contrast, may have strong social skills and enjoy parties and business meetings, but after a while wish they were home in their pajamas. They prefer to devote their social energies to close friends, colleagues, and family. They listen more than they talk, think before they speak, and often feel as if they express themselves better in writing than in conversation. They tend to dislike conflict. Many have a horror of small talk, but enjoy deep discussions.”
Susan Cain, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

“There's zero correlation between being the best talker and having the best ideas.”

Susan Cain
“...I also believe that introversion is my greatest strength. I have such a strong inner life that I’m never bored and only occasionally lonely. No matter what mayhem is happening around me, I know I can always turn inward.”
