And Now for Something Completely Different

One of the aspects of our story that has received less attention is that we enlisted the help of a psychic and a healer when Tom was gravely ill. They both played an unusual but important role in supporting me, Tom and our family as his life hung in the balance.

For the first time, Tom and I wre joined by psychic-intuitive counselor, Robert Lindsy-Milne, to discuss his role in Tom's recovery in th Read more of this blog post »

The Perfect Predator by Steffanie Strathdee
"I can only think to describe this as a medical thriller. It felt like I was watching House, getting hooked into a medical mystery with some incredulous, nearly unbeliveable outcome - except this is all nonfiction and actually happened to the author a" Read more of this review »
The Perfect Predator by Steffanie Strathdee
"What an incredible story! I was a wreck through much of it. It’s beautifully written and she’s able to engage you the whole time. I recommend listening to the audiobook to focus on the story and not so much on medical and scientific jargon. But she d" Read more of this review »

The Perfect Predator by Steffanie Strathdee
"This book is, of course, science. However, it was written more as a memoir and in a completely approachable way. I enjoyed it more like a novel than nonfiction. It is also very important. I hope that it is read widely so that phages can be taken more" Read more of this review »

“It's no joke that hospitals are now often referred to as the worst place to get well. Superbugs are looking out the hospital windows, licking their chops at the feast that awaits them in this era of superbugs without borders.”
Steffanie Strathdee, The Perfect Predator: A Scientist's Race to Save Her Husband from a Deadly Superbug: A Memoir

“A wise person once said, "The most important two days in your life are the day you were born, and the day you find out why.”
Steffanie Strathdee, The Perfect Predator: A Scientist's Race to Save Her Husband from a Deadly Superbug: A Memoir

“Everybody knows that pestilences have a way of recurring in the world; yet somehow we find it hard to believe in ones that crash down on our heads from a blue sky. There have been as many plagues as wars in history; yet always plagues and wars take people equally by surprise. —Albert Camus, The Plague”

“Evolution has no foresight. Complex machinery develops its own agendas. Brains — cheat. Feedback loops evolve to promote stable heartbeats and then stumble upon the temptation of rhythm and music. The rush evoked by fractal imagery, the algorithms used for habitat selection, metastasize into art. Thrills that once had to be earned in increments of fitness can now be had from pointless introspection. Aesthetics rise unbidden from a trillion dopamine receptors, and the system moves beyond modeling the organism. It begins to model the very process of modeling. It consumes evermore computational resources, bogs itself down with endless recursion and irrelevant simulations. Like the parasitic DNA that accretes in every natural genome, it persists and proliferates and produces nothing but itself. Metaprocesses bloom like cancer, and awaken, and call themselves I.”
Peter Watts, Blindsight

Leonard Cohen, Selected Poems, 1956-1968

“And I'll dance with you in Vienna,
I'll be wearing a river's disguise.
The hyacinth wild on my shoulder
my mouth on the dew of your thighs.
And I'll bury my soul in a scrapbook,
with the photographs there and the moss.
And I'll yield to the flood of your beauty,
my cheap violin and my cross.”
Leonard Cohen, Stranger Music: Selected Poems and Songs

“We stopped looking for monsters under our bed when we realized that they were inside us.”
Charles Darwin

“A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.”
Mark Twain
