Most of my research was done in books and online, because of course what I really needed to know was not so much what Brooklyn is like now (though that's helpful too), but what it was like in the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s. I loved the short time I spent there and have always wanted to go back. Both my parents lived in Brooklyn briefly in the 1950s, living with older family members who had moved there long before. Newfoundlanders have such strong roots there, and yet that Newfoundland presence has almost completely vanished from Brooklyn's history.(less)

Frances is a teenager in the mid-1960s when a fortune teller gives her a dire-sounding prediction that shadows the rest of her life and ends up shattering her relationship with her two closest friends. Frances believes, as a result of this prophecy, that she will be murdered — and although she lives to be seventy-five, the obsession with f

“I'll be a story in your head. That's okay. We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, eh? 'Cause it was, you know. It was the best. The daft old man who stole a magic box and ran away. Did I ever tell you that I stole it? Well I borrowed it. I was always going to take it back.”
