We go back and forth to get the final rundown, and I make a document with the scenes in question to make it easier for her. Then she shows me rough sketches, I provide feedback, and so on and so forth.

Many of the character design choices, like the jagged, lightning-like streak in Victor's hair, were her idea!(less)

From the first chapter, I loved the characters. They're unlikable in the best way possible, and the way their backstories emerged throughout? Perfection. I think my heart melted a few times. The story twists around delightfully, both with foreshadowi ...more

Beautiful book, and I raced through it. It was full of twists, turns, engaging descriptions, and edge-of-your-seat pacing.

I did feel like it could have been a little longer and expand on a few points that left me confused. The backstory felt like the

“There’d been too many times in his life that he’d desperately hoped for a hero and no one came. He might not be a hero, but at least he could show up.”
R.M. Scheller, Extension Squad Vol. 2

“I have left orders to be awakened at any time during national emergency, even if I'm in a cabinet meeting.”
Ronald Reagan

“How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up individually to a righteous cause? Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go, but what does my death matter, if through us, thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?”
Sophie Scholl

“It’s the reductionist approach to life: if you keep it small, you’ll keep it under control. If you don’t make any noise, the bogeyman won’t find you. But it’s all an illusion, because they die too, those people who roll up their spirits into tiny little balls so as to be safe. Safe?! From what? Life is always on the edge of death; narrow streets lead to the same place as wide avenues, and a little candle burns itself out just like a flaming torch does. I choose my own way to burn.”
Sophie Scholl
