I have been a comic artist and a self-publisher since I was in high school in the mid-90's. In 2005 my book Will You Still Love Me If I Wet the Bed? was published by Top Shelf Productions; it won an Ignatz Award for Outstanding Debut. Top Shelf has since published two more of my autobio comic collections, Delayed Replays in 2008, and Alone Forever earlier this year. In September my first full length graphic novel, a memoir about adolescence and gender stereotypes called Tomboy, comes out from Zest Books.

I have had comics published in numerous anthologies, drawn stories for the wildly popular Adventure Time series, and I am a columnist for the punk magazine Razorcake.

Currently my cat Dracula is sitting on my lap, and his sister Wolfman is g

Hi Diana,

Sorry I didn't see this question until now; it's my first goodreads question, to boot!!

I do agree with the YA classification: it was written specifically to be a teen/YA book, but one that would have readership with adults as well. That being said, I didn't really know what that would mean, in terms of content, so I wrote the book the way I wanted, and assumed that if a part was "too old", it would be edited out; in the end nothing got taken out. I am a little disappointed that some reviews of the book have commented that it is not appropriate for younger teens (13-16 year olds), because of the language; I wanted the dialogue to be authentic, and swearing was just a part of my childhood. Some people have argued that the content about gender is too advanced for younger readers, but I tried to write the book to have different layers, like an onion of meaning. Some things you can just get from the surface, some things are more abstract.

I have gotten a surprising number of emails from 9-12 year olds who love the book, and want to tell me about their own tomboy experiences. I have also gotten a surprising number of emails from parents with gender non-conforming children, who say that they understand their kids so much better after reading my book. I am touched by all of these responses, because I never really imagined that my story could HELP someone else, but it has!

There were aspects of this book that I really liked, but I found the southern accents to be over the top, the murder-mystery to be uninteresting, and the courtroom proceedings to be boring.

“Could my problem have been that I was looking for validation in the wrong places all along?”
Liz Prince, Tomboy: A Graphic Memoir

“There are a few things as heartbreaking to me as seeing a person swimming in a T-shirt. And I can speak with the authority of someone who did it for years. It is conspicuous. It bogs you down. When you get out of the water, you take half the lake with you. It takes the fun out of swimming and puts a visual metaphor to the burdens of a negative body image.”
Liz Prince, Tomboy: A Graphic Memoir

“Whoa dude. My belt came undone when you said that.”

Thank you so much for passing the book on to your kid; I'm honored that you've both enjoyed Tomboy.
