Train to Mumbai: Author's note

As a child, I dreamed of relocating to Mumbai, the city of dreams, and becoming a filmmaker, as the art of telling compelling stories through film captivated my heart. But as the years progressed, my life started to take new turns, and my dream of becoming a filmmaker perished because it was unrealistic and unachievable due to the challenges I faced as an individual living with a disability.

During my early adulthood, I realized that, like films, books too could depict powerful and unforgettable stories to a vast audience. Therefore, in September 2014, I began writing Train to Mumbai, as I desired to use storytelling to highlight social issues that I believe need awareness, such as my struggle to obtain employment as a person with a disability, which I have portrayed through Maya. When writing Train to Mumbai, I wanted to create characters from diverse backgrounds and depict their unique struggles. I also wanted to develop antagonists that helped to illustrate the struggles of each of the characters.

Though Train to Mumbai took years of dedication, commitment and patience to write, I’m content to have been able to write it by unleashing my imagination and conducting research.
