Jason Born is a popular historical novelist of many series as well as stand-alone titles. His latest work, On Love & War, is an epic tale of devotion and pain in Napoleonic Europe. The Long Fuse is an ongoing series that thrillingly captures the violent period of America’s rise from ragtag colonies to independence. He is the author three other gritty series of works spanning time and place. Lions & Devils vividly describes the heroes and villains of the monstrous Islamic assault of Western Europe during the Eighth Century. The Norseman Chronicles center on the faithful Viking, Halldorr, who desired peace, but found only war in the Old and New Worlds. The Wald Chronicles describe the rugged conflict and improbable outcome

I'll narrow it for you, fear not! The Scandinavians were among the last European pagans to actively practice their ancient ways when more history began to be written down. So we know a little more about it than say specific gods of ancient European tribes. I chose to focus on Norse over say the Danes (nothing against the Danes) because in English literature, because of the Danelaw, most is focused on raiders from Denmark rather than the intrepid Norseman. I also think the whole idea of setting out island hopping to the unknown northwest Atlantic to Iceland, Greenland, and then Vinland is one of the most amazing tales of adventure in human history. Thanks for asking!!(less)

Mad Musings

A month or two ago I started a humble blog on my author website. On it, I dig into some interesting tidbits of history that may or may not have ever make it into any of my novels.

The latest one is on torture, mutilation, cannibalism among the North American tribesmen in colonial times and beyond.

If you are interested in reading my little mad musings, you can find them here:

Really appreciated this book and the brief history of 20th Century Christianity in the U.S. Nice job at diagnosing where we may have gone of the rails a few times, setting up the current trajectory. Last chapter offered several options/solutions for ...more

“The following spring was a time of calving. Great icebergs calved from the vast glaciers which stretched down to our fjords from distant mountains. The heifers and cows of Kaupangen gave birth to over one hundred calves that spring. Most survived. Gudrod, the master shepherd, had seventy-five new lambkins skipping after their mothers. Ten sets of lamb twins were born in the city that year. Bitches had pups suckling at their breasts. The mountain goats that stood watch over the fjord, indifferently chewing on the wild grasses between the rocks, had kids following them on their steep paths. The residents of the city, too, gave birth. Twenty-one new healthy babies were born within thirty days of the spring equinox; boys and girls with thick blonde, brown, black, or red hair; others with smooth bald heads. Olaf, my third father, my king, had a son, stillborn. Olaf wept. Kenna wept. I wept as the boy was buried inside the casket with his mother in our graveyard by the church.”

“You are not men who long for a weak enemy!  You are warriors from the North.  You demand a strong enemy.”

Stephanie! - Thank you. Hope you get a chance to read The Norseman. I wrote it for a male audience, but it turns out that ladies like it. One more indication that I'll never quite get the pulse of female folk.
