Crunching down the numbers
One of the most popular questions I get asked is: “How long did it take you to write…?”
Honestly, that’s a question I ask myself too. I need to know how much time I invest and how much I earn for each hour invested for all my other jobs (translator and editor, in case you’re wondering) and this summer I decided I would begin to keep track of my writing time. Now I’ve decided to share some results with you.
These numbers apply to a short story (5,500 words; usually, a full novel is around 70,000...

The story that is
Have I fallen off the face of the Earth? Nope!
In fact, I haven’t been silent quite as long as it seems, either. I wrote a number of posts for other blogs; I’ll compile them all and give you the links soon. Meanwhile, there’s something of an update I wanted to share:
Sometimes, the story you want to tell is not the story that IS.
My current work-in-progress was born as a conceptual novel. I wanted to explore the paradigms of good and evil, heroes and villains. Do you know how long that concept l...

Faerie paths
There’s a scene in The Wild Hunt where our main character, Lily, gets lost and wanders a faerie path. Her adventure is based on personal experience!
Once, I made a school trip to a historical city that’s built on top of a hill, for strategic reasons (city’s Toledo, if you’re curious). After a short organized visit, our teachers let us loose and a friend and I tried to find our way to various interesting spots. We only ever managed to get to the Jewish quarter, though. From then on, any street...

Quoting myself
“There,” he said. “Do you see?”
Lily followed the line of his finger and squinted. There, between the leaves dappled in shadows, stood a dash of color.
“Is that—?” she tilted her head. The vision angle was very poor and she tried to take a step closer to the window, to see. Troy’s arm locked around her waist like an iron band, though, keeping her back. “It can’t possibly be David the gnome, right?”

From idea to novel: Fall from Grace
Lots of people have asked how we writers get our ideas for new stories, so I thought I would share the process Fall from Grace followed, from inception to planning to novel.
The first secret: I wasn’t meant to write Fall from Grace.
I think I was reading a post about alternating point of view. Or perhaps it was a review about a plot twist that took the reviewer by surprise (the good kind). Or maybe it’s just that those two things happened, and they happened close enough to get lumped in the sam...

Where to advertise your novel
A while back I did a post on marketing explaining my own adventures. What I discussed there worked best for long term, and I plan to eventually write a companion with more data as I collect it (read: when I launch my next series and can compare actions and reactions), but sometimes you want a boost. You want sales that will increase your discoverability.
Enter book advertising.

If you want to get the most out of your ads, you want to take three things into account:
Always, always promote t...
