The fact that I write for children, though, rather than for adults, is because books were so important to me as a girl. We were quite poor and I didn't get to go many places or do many unusually fun things, but books were doorways to other worlds, other lives. While I was reading I was living in different times and places and having adventures vicariously. It made such a difference in my life and to the person I was to become that from the time I was ten I knew I wanted not just to be a writer, but to write for this age group. While I'm at it, I should say that because we had little money I had a very few books of my own. Libraries--both school and public--made all the difference to this book-lover/wannabe writer. (less)

Success comes to each aspiring writer when the time and the book are just right. For one person it may be a matter of months before an acceptance. For far more people it will be years. For still others a contract may never materialize. But one thing I know for sure is you will never know if you could have seen your words in print if you quit trying.

“Love was actions more than words. And not just easy actions like hugs and kisses. It was hard ones, like sticking by someone in bad times, not just in good. It was working for them, even when you were tired. It was putting their needs first, even before your own. It was taking care of them when they were sick. It was forgiving them when they disappointed you. It was protecting them and teaching them.”
